What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

My approach for treating anxiety is helping the client identify current triggers as well as possible past trauma that contributes to the anxiety. I am gently curious and try to make connections to help the client understand the source and reason for the anxiety.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

We focus on deep breathing at multiple times during the session as well as practice internal and external awareness, healthy distraction, social connection, and positive self talk. I also assess if a referral to psychiatric provider is appropriate.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

Clients are more aware of the impact of anxiety on their relationships and lifestyles. Clients are able to tolerate and even enjoy new things, such as going outside, spending time with others due to increased confidence and symptoms management.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Using the time between therapy sessions to practice new cognitions and behaviors is an important part of recovery. I like to suggest reading, journaling, a creative pursuit and a physical pursuit.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

Be prepared to answer a wide variety of questions for the assessment, which might not have a lot to do with the primary problem. Also, knowing any medications and dosage is really helpful. But overall, just take a deep breath and be open and honest about the problems you are experiencing.

Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Anchorage, AK can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Anchorage therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

Signs of Anxiety Disorders

Stress and anxiety are completely normal, but people with anxiety disorders deal with these emotions to an intense degree, often for months or years at a time. Talking themselves down or managing their stress can feel impossible and exhausting, making them dread everyday activities.

Some common signs that you might be dealing with an anxiety disorder include:

  • Nervousness, tension, and a feeling of being on-edge
  • Feelings of panic and dread without a specific cause
  • Intrusive thoughts or concerns
  • Racing heartbeat
  • Difficulty focusing or concentrating
  • Recurring nightmares
  • Trouble falling or staying asleep
  • Exhaustion or fatigue
  • Trouble feeling present
  • Increased anger

Common Anxiety Disorders

You might experience some of these symptoms, or your experience with anxiety might be completely different. There are many anxiety disorders, and here are some of the most common:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): This disorder describes people who experience prevalent and near-constant worry that occurs for six months or longer.
  • Social anxiety disorder: This disorder causes people to experience irrational fear, anxiety, self-consciousness, and embarrassment in everyday social interactions.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): This disorder develops after a person experiences or witnesses an extreme physically or emotionally distressing incident.
  • Panic disorder: People with this disorder experience panic attacks and are often anxious about when the next one will occur.

What to Expect in Anxiety Therapy

Psychotherapy (also known as talk therapy) and medication, or a combination of the two, are some of the most effective methods for treating anxiety.

People with anxiety are strongly affected by the power of their anxious thoughts, even if those thoughts are not an accurate reflection of reality. In psychotherapy, a therapist or counselor can help you learn how to identify and change these irrational thought patterns. This is a major part of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) — a form of therapy frequently used to treat anxiety.

Therapists and counselors can also teach you skills to combat your anxiety in your everyday life. This can include practices like meditating, exercising regularly, doing yoga, eating healthy foods, and getting enough sleep. The guidance of a mental health professional can help you implement these habits in your life.

I am former senior law enforcement officer in western Alaska. I found Behavioral Health Services could absolutely benefit people everywhere. Especially, in remote areas of Alaska. Jenifer Morton has experience and training to assist clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, chemical dependency, PTSD or Trauma related issues just as a few. Alaska needs more professionals with Jennifer Morton’s experience.
