What is your go-to approach for online therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in therapy starts with getting to know you as a person and not just a client. I want to know about your life: What’s working, and what could be better? What are your hopes and dreams? What are your strengths? What are you passionate about, what brings you joy, and how can we build more of that for you? I use an integrative approach that explores how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors overlap, and work to coax change in all of these areas to bring a better sense of life balance. Everything you share with me will help me to provide support and work toward solutions!

What tools do you teach in online therapy?

I often use a combination of the following tools in online therapy: mindfulness, CBT and DBT skills (e.g. behavioral activation, challenging of cognitive distortions and automatic negative thoughts, emotion regulation skills, distress tolerance skills, interpersonal effectiveness skills), tracking of patterns for problem behaviors and adaptive coping, strengths-based goal setting, and many more.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in online therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in therapy when they start to recognize they are coping better or feeling less distressed.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement online therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in therapy by staying mindful of their therapy and life goals. Sometimes our therapy sessions will have homework such as tracking patterns and trying new skills, and the more invested clients can be in the therapy process, the better their outcomes are likely to be.

What should someone do to prepare for starting online therapy?

To prepare for your first therapy session, you can find a quiet, safe, comfortable space from which to join your telehealth session. The goal of the intake session is to collect information to inform future therapy services, so please be prepared to answer a lot of questions about your current concerns, mental and physical health, personal and family history, etc. I will ask you to tell me about what you are struggling with, but I also want to know the unique strengths and skills you already have! We will also begin to set goals to guide our work together. It's not unusual to feel a little nervous before the first appointment, and I will do my best to help you feel at ease. It is so important to find a therapist who is a good fit for you, and I welcome your feedback in that regard. I'm also happy to answer any questions you may have!

Starting Online therapy

What is online therapy?

With Thriveworks, Online therapy is an effective alternative to in-person therapy services in which a client can speak to a Thriveworks therapist remotely via online video conferencing. Online sessions are just as effective as in-person treatment, but they can also provide added benefits like reduced travel time, saving money on transportation or childcare, and increased access to care.

How does online therapy work?

Online therapy works much like traditional in-person therapy but takes place through secure video conferencing. Clients can attend Online therapy from any safe place they choose that has access to the internet, whether that be their home or another easily accessible place. Like in-person treatment, a therapist will work with their client to address their concerns, create goals, and establish an effective treatment plan.

What is the best option for online therapy?

There is no best option for online therapy—instead, it’s best to focus on finding a provider that meets your specific needs and with whom you can form a professional connection with.

Is online therapy just as effective?

Yes, online therapy is just as effetive for many clients as in-person sessions.

How long does online therapy last?

Online therapy can last for a few months to years depending on the goals and symptoms of the client. The treatment process will be unique to each client and lend itself to their specific concerns, which means that the time it takes to treat them will always be different. Timing is also up to the client themselves; they are free to stop therapy whenever they please, especially if they feel they have reached their goals and addressed their concerns.

How much does online therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Need more help deciding?

Beth and her husband got divorced when their children were very young. Over the years, she’s learned how to juggle working full time and raising two kids. However, she still finds herself rushing home to make dinner and spend time with them before it’s time to go to bed. After cleaning up around the house, she spends time reading over her kids’ homework to make sure it’s been completed. When she finally settles down for the night, it’s when her head is hitting the pillow.

Beth has been struggling for a while with depression and mood swings and feels like her overwhelming schedule has something to do with it. She wishes there was an option to get the help she needs that fits her busy schedule. Fortunately, there is.

Online counseling is an effective and easy way to get the mental health help you need when you need it. If you’re struggling like Beth, online therapy might be the right fit for you. Learning how to manage your time, stress, and complicated emotions are just some of the ways therapy can help.

Telephone Sessions vs. Video Sessions

We offer our clients two easy ways to virtually talk to their provider: over the phone or over video. Both options are reliable, effective, and easy to use. Here’s a little more information about them:

  • Phone Counseling: Just as the name implies, this form of online counseling involves talking to your provider over a phone call. At your scheduled appointment time, all you have to do is answer your therapist’s call.
  • Video Chat Counseling: If you prefer more face-to-face interaction with your therapist, video chat counseling is an excellent option for you. Before your appointment time, you will receive a link to a secure video chat room from your therapist. When it’s time, all you have to do is click the link.

Online therapy can be extremely beneficial to a lot of people. Whether you have a busy schedule or an open schedule, it proves to be a favorable option for our clients.

Who Is the Right Fit for Online Counseling?

Do you struggle to communicate with your family? Are you struggling to stay focused at work? Do you have low self-esteem? All of these are reasons to seek out counseling. The psychologists, counselors, coaches, and therapists at our office specialize in a multitude of areas surrounding mental health. Some of the more common reasons we work with clients include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Family turmoil
  • Behavioral problems in children
  • Eating disorders
  • Marriage or relationship issues
  • Low self-esteem
  • Grief and loss
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Significant life changes
  • Stress management
  • Anger management

Every person’s situation is unique, and yours is no different. The above list only touches on a few of the areas that we can provide you assistance with. Your Thriveworks licensed therapist will ensure that your individual needs and goals are met by creating a treatment plan specific to you and your challenges.

The Benefits of Online Counseling

Online counseling has a wide variety of benefits. To name a few, the added benefits include:

  1. Comfortability: One of the greatest perks is how comfortable online therapy is. Some people may feel pressure when sitting in a room with their therapist for the first time. You might feel nervous or awkward. Online therapy takes away that traditional in-person aspect and allows some of our clients to open up quicker than they would otherwise.
  2. Convenience: You can have your appointment virtually anywhere! In your car on the way home, during your lunch break, after dinner, curled up on your couch, and more.
  3. Effectiveness: Some might think that online counseling would be less effective than in-person counseling. However, that’s not the case. You can make the same meaningful progress over the phone or via video as you would sitting in an office.

Additional benefits like affordability and flexible scheduling options are also perks that our clients enjoy. Once you start online counseling, you’ll understand the leaps and bounds you can make in your mental health journey.
