Starting Family therapy

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in , UT usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in , UT offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

Need more help deciding?

Cassie is living at home with her parents while she works and goes to school. It’s not what she expected to be doing after college, but she doesn’t have any other options. Being home stresses her out because her dad suffers from anger issues and her mom treats her like she’s in elementary school again, not a working adult. On top of all of this, Cassie constantly gets blamed for things that her younger brother doesn’t do. She wants her family to work better together and she’s having a hard time getting them to listen to her feelings. Cassie decides to bring up the idea of family therapy.

Family is a unique gift that needs to be appreciated and treasured, even when they’re driving you crazy. As much as they make you mad, interrupt you, annoy you, curse at you, try to control you, these are the people who know you the best and who love you.” –Jenna Morasca

Thriveworks Utah has online family therapy sessions to help families like Cassie’s, and yours, work through the issues holding you back. Family therapy is designed to not only address family conflicts but provide the family unit with skills and tools to move forward after therapy in a healthier, more harmonious light. If you are in Utah and are experiencing a problem in your family, consider working with one of our experienced family therapists. To get started, give us a call.

How Does Family Therapy Work?

Family therapy is often short-term, meaning that as few as nine sessions are needed to resolve the problems at hand. We understand that every family is different and your problems are unique, that’s why your family therapist will first get to know you and your family as well as the individual problems you are going through. With this information, your psychologist will create an individualized treatment plan to tackle those challenges. That being said, your family therapist will equip you with tools and skills for working through your current and future problems.

No family can become “perfect” so it’s important to set realistic goals during your sessions. It’s important to remember that even the most perfect families still bicker. Take Finding Nemo for example. Nemo’s dad, Marlin, tries his hardest to be the best dad to Nemo possible. However, they still do butt heads despite their close relationship. But at the end of the day, Marlin would do whatever he could to make sure his son is safe and healthy.

Your psychologist will use a variety of different methods and tools to connect with each family member in a meaningful way. Some things you can expect to tackle during your sessions include:

  • Effective communication
  • Active listening
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Anger and stress management

Is My Family the Right Fit for Therapy?

As we mentioned previously, family counselors are trained to help people work through the challenges that occur between family members. This problem could be between parents, parents and children, siblings, or affect multiple generations. Regardless of the issue at hand, you can expect to get help for your family’s particular concerns. At Thriveworks Utah, our family psychologists and therapists help families work through:

  • Divorce and separation
  • Major life changes
  • Financial strain
  • Poor communication
  • Relationship issues
  • Mental illnesses like depression and/ or anxiety
  • Substance abuse and addiction
  • Parenting challenges
  • Behavioral problems in children
  • Trust issues
  • Disagreeing siblings

And more! If the issue you are encountering is not on the list above, don’t worry. This is just a short list of common concerns we see here at Thriveworks Utah. There is no quick fix for any of these problems, but therapy may give you and your family members the guidance and support you need to get through them. When families are willing to work and grow together, they can break harmful cycles of arguing and learn healthier ways to reconnect.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
