Starting Family therapy

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in Towson, MD usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in Towson, MD offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

Need more help deciding?

Whether your family is younger or older, big or small, rich or poor, you are bound to have conflicts come up. Maybe you and your siblings argue, your mom is going through a divorce, your cousin is starting drama, or your parents are unaccepting of a decision you have made. Take the popular TV series Schitt’s Creek for example. Well-off family of four, the Roses, have an unexpected financial hit that causes them to lose practically everything they owned. Forced to move to small-town Schitt’s Creek, they have to navigate how to live in tighter quarters, how to communicate better, and be there for each other through thick and thin. They have their ups and downs as any family would. When the challenges your family faces get too big to handle on your own, such as a major life change, it may be time to reach out for the help of a trust family therapist.

Family love is messy, clinging, and of an annoying and repetitive pattern, like bad wallpaper.” – Friedrich Nietzsche

Thriveworks Towson, MD family therapists are equipped to help you repair your relationships with your loved ones. While we might despise our family members from time to time, the truth is that they have a large impact on our lives whether we like it or not. The Challenges that Families Face

The issues that families run into are not new. They generally come down to communication, trust, and love. When something disrupts the balance of the family and home, it can be hard to remember those core values. Family therapists, counselors, and psychologists have the skills and training to help families work through issues including:

Anxiety, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), alcoholism, drug addictions, relationship problems, divorce or separation, physical illness, major life changes, loss of a loved one, trauma, poor communication, mental illness, behavioral problems, infidelity, neglect, financial strain, parenting disagreements

Family therapy can guide you and your loved ones into making meaningful changes, some that probably should have been done a long time ago, that will benefit the whole family. This method of treatment can also make you and your family members have tough conversations about some of the topics listed above and others. Your Thriveworks Towson Counseling family therapist will guide you through these important conversations. Our goal is to help you develop stronger relationships and live happier lives.

What Should We Expect from Family Therapy?

Each family therapy session will last around 60 minutes, and you can expect to attend 9 to 12 therapy sessions. Family therapy is often short-term but if you and your family members need more time, that’s perfectly fine. Your therapist will speak with each of you on an individual level so they can get a better picture of what the root causes are. By identifying the underlying problems, your counselor will be able to create a plan of action that is based on your family’s individual needs and goals. In doing so, you can also expect to discuss the following with your family counselor:

  1. What the identified issues are at hand
  2. Each individuals’ thoughts, feelings, opinions, and goals
  3. The current state of your relationships
  4. You and your family’s strengths and weaknesses
  5. Individual behaviors that are negatively impacting the group
  6. Expectations, dynamics, and family roles
  7. How to improve communication skills and active listening
  8. Regaining and rebuilding trust
  9. What effective problem-solving skills are
  10. How to create a safe, supportive atmosphere

We believe the cornerstone of quality client care is based on open communication and trust. Our counselors will work with you to create a safe space for everyone to talk freely without fear of judgment or ridicule. Deciding to take the next step and get the help you need is not always an easy decision. It takes a lot of courage and cooperation. However, taking the leap towards a better way of living and communicating will not only repair broken relationships but set you and your loved ones up for a better future together.

Karen Osborne is amazing ! Listened and heard to everything I had to share. I felt easy to share. She analyzed and explained. She is a very professional and kind person. She made me feel like I was worthy of more and then, she went one step further and walked me through the process of my recovery. Not everyone can be so lucky to say the same.
