Starting Couples therapy

What is Couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does Couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is Couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does Couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples' needs, the challenges they'd like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Need more help deciding?

Your relationship has always felt rock-solid. You tend to agree on everything and have always been honest and respectful of one another. You finish each other’s sentences and even love the same kind of pizza. What else could you ask for?

But lately, something’s changed. Your partner seems distant and closed off, you argue about everything, and feel like you’re speaking different languages. And are those olives on that pizza?!

Disagreements within a relationship are normal, and even the most dynamic duo will butt heads every now and again. It’s the way you work through your issues that can make all the difference.

Think of your relationship like a house. A sturdy home has a solid foundation and framework, strong walls, and secure windows and doors. But if one of those structures begins to falter, it can cause the others to crack, rot, or crumble. A licensed marriage and family therapist can play the role of an experienced contractor. They can help you determine any weak spots in your relationship and give you the tools you need to repair them.

If your relationship is in a funk, on the rocks, or could just use a tune-up, it might be a good time to begin couples counseling. Schedule an appointment at Thriveworks in Lafayette, LA to get started today.

Should We Consider Relationship Counseling?

Your relationship doesn’t have to be going up in flames to benefit from couples therapy. Marriage and family therapy can help resolve short-term issues or teach you how to build a solid foundation for the future. But it can also put out the flames from a major blow-up, a long-standing problem, or repeated disagreement.

Sometimes relationship issues arise from outside of the relationship itself. Mental health issues, physical illness, and stress at work or school can cause irritability or tension between two people. These causes for turmoil are especially hard to manage without help, especially when the problem itself cannot always be eliminated.

Couples seek out relationship counseling for lots of different reasons, typically with one common goal — a happy, healthy relationship that lasts. Some of the reasons people turn to couples and marriage counseling include:

  • Major life transitions
  • Infidelity or lack of trust
  • Jealousy
  • Ineffective communication
  • Grief or loss of a loved one
  • Stress caused by illness
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Premarital issues

Even if you and your partner are facing a difficult problem not on this list, a licensed marriage and family therapist at Thriveworks in Lafayette, LA can help you work through it peacefully.

How Can Couples Therapy and Marriage Counseling Help Us?

Many couples find that counseling improves their relationship in more ways than one. Working with a couples therapist will not only help resolve your disputes in the short term, but will also give you the tools to maintain a healthy relationship in the long term.

During your therapy sessions, your counselor will work with you to uncover underlying concerns and provide suggestions for how you can address them. Your counselor will walk you through the tools and techniques that can help you repair your relationship and move forward.

Benefits of couples counseling include:

  • Improved communication
  • Greater appreciation for one another
  • Improved intimacy
  • Stress and anger management
  • Resolving long-standing conflicts
  • Repair of trust and mutual respect
  • Peaceful home life

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
