Starting Family therapy

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in Lafayette, LA usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in Lafayette, LA offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

Need more help deciding?

Things have been a little rocky at home lately. The kids won’t stop fighting, your spouse seems distant, and you’re so stressed at work you have no patience or energy when you get home at the end of a long day. If you’re lucky enough to get everyone around the dinner table at once, you bicker in between bites and end the evening with a bad taste in your mouth. This is not the family you know and you don’t understand what’s going on.

All families have their ups and downs and go through rough patches from time to time, even the ones who appear flawless and endlessly happy on social media. But every once in a while, you may find yourselves in an endless cycle of discord, where you just don’t seem to be able to see eye-to-eye.

Your family is a group of complicated individuals, all with unique thoughts, emotions, and personalities. Everyone has their own internal universe, and sometimes that makes peaceful existence a great challenge. Every so often, you feel like you could really use a mediator, or even an interpreter to get through to one another.

If you’re having trouble communicating or resolving conflict with family members, or you’re facing a collective struggle or difficult life transition, it may be a good time to consider family counseling. The therapists and counselors at Thriveworks in Lafayette, LA can help your family reconnect and restore your bonds.

Is Family Therapy Right for Us?

You don’t have to be on the verge of war to consider family therapy. Family therapists can help you solve problems, connect with one another, and build stronger family relationships. Many families seek counseling in an effort to understand one another in a more meaningful way.

Sometimes, one family member may be facing a serious problem like addiction or illness that negatively affects the rest of the family. Counseling can help other families understand their loved one’s struggles and show them how to support them through the healing process.

There are countless reasons a family might consider family therapy, including:

  • Strained family relationships
  • Behavioral problems in children
  • Conflicts that don’t resolve on their own
  • Financial strain
  • Major life changes
  • Divorce or separation
  • Substance abuse or addiction
  • Infidelity or trust issues
  • Grief and loss

Family counseling is for any family that wants to repair or strengthen their relationships and continue growing together. A licensed therapist at Thriveworks in Lafayette, LA can help you do just that and become a cohesive unit again.

How Could Family Therapy Help My Family?

Even if you sometimes feel like you and your family are speaking different languages, a therapist can help you see eye-to-eye again. Family counseling can help you resolve the specific issues that are causing conflict by giving you the tools to work through them effectively.

Family counseling is especially useful for family members that can’t seem to settle a dispute. Feelings like anger, frustration, and confusion can make it difficult to work problems out on your own. A therapist can help you understand the cause of your quarrels and guide you through a resolution.

Your therapist will work with each family member individually to learn more about their personality and point of view. They’ll then guide you through therapy sessions as a group to begin working on techniques that will improve your relationships. You can expect your counselor or therapist to teach you how to use these methods at home too so you can apply them in the long term.

Some benefits of family counseling include:

  • Improved communication
  • Better validation and listening skills
  • Restored trust in one another
  • Solved problems
  • Stronger appreciation for one another
  • Stress and anger management

The licensed mental health professionals at Thriveworks in Lafayette, LA can help your family rebuild trust, improve communication, and forge loving relationships.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
