What is your go-to approach for dialectical behavior therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people who are engaging in DBT is to help the client identify the skills and areas of life they would like to improve, and incorporate components of DBT as necessary.

What tools do you teach in dialectical behavior therapy?

I teach the following tools in dialectical behavior therapy:

  • How to communicate with themselves and others
  • Mindfulness - the ability to think about one's thinking, the ability to “let go” of racing thoughts
  • Distress tolerance - the ability to tolerate distressing events as necessary
  • Emotional regulation - the ability to use skills and strategies to regulate difficult emotions
  • Boundary setting

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavior therapy?

A client is making meaningful progress in dialectical behavioral therapy when they are able to utilize the skills they learn in therapy and apply them outside of therapy the majority of the time. DBT is not about getting it “right” all the time, but rather shifting the way one communicates with themselves and others to improve the likelihood of positive outcomes.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement dialectical behavior therapy?

In their personal time, clients can supplement skills learned in DBT by ensuring they know how to engage with different coping skills prior to needing them. This is like completing a fire drill; we want to know what to do in an urgent situation before the moment arises.

What should someone do to prepare for starting dialectical behavior therapy?

DBT is a modality that I will use regardless of most clients' presenting concerns, so the client need not be worried about how to prepare specifically for this approach. I encourage individuals to simply show up as they are, and to not put too much pressure on themselves. You get to decide how much information you share in the first session.

Starting Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)

What is dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)?

At Thriveworks, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) primarily concentrates on assisting individuals in emotion regulation, enhancing interpersonal relationships, and acquiring effective coping strategies for managing stress and emotional difficulties.

How does DBT work?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) targets your personal challenges. You may work with your DBT therapist to maintain diary cards to monitor progress, emphasizing validation and support in the therapeutic relationship. DBT follows a stage-based approach, prioritizing crisis reduction initially and life satisfaction.

What is DBT best used for?

DBT was initially developed to address the needs of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, its versatile approach has enabled its application to a wide range of mental health conditions, including but not limited to, anxiety, depression, stress, and anger issues.

What are the 4 pillars of DBT?

The 4 pillars of DBT are mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.

Is DBT better than EMDR?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) have distinct purposes and aren’t inherently superior or inferior to one another. DBT is most effective for managing emotional regulation, personality disorders, and interpersonal challenges, while EMDR is specifically tailored for individuals with trauma-related conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Is DBT conducted in person or online?

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) with therapists at Thriveworks in Colorado Springs, CO is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How many months is DBT?

The duration of a standard DBT program is typically around 24 weeks, which is roughly six months. The actual number of sessions will vary depending on the issues you wish to address.

Since day one Marie has been so nice and understanding of all my issues with anger. She has helped me so much to take a step back and analyze issues and approach them in a very calm manner and retrain my brain to deal with anxiety issues that lead to anger. She has helped a ton in putting forth effort to better my marriage and other relationships with family. I couldn’t thank her enough for all her help in the last couple of months and in the future! Love her!! Definitely recommend her!

I have known Cassandra for over 10 years and have seen her work hard for the clients she serves. She is caring and compassionate while also approaching her work with clients and colleagues realistically and honestly. They know she is trustworthy and means what she says, and that it comes from a good place. She genuinely wants the best for others.

Jennifer is one of the best and I'd recommend her to everyone without thinking twice. She's helped me though burnout, anxiety, grief (and so much more), while being one of the most compassionate and knowledgeable therapists I've interacted with.
