Starting Couples therapy

What is Couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does Couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is Couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does Couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples' needs, the challenges they'd like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Romantic relationships can be the source of our deepest love. They provide us with our closest companions, confidantes, and life partners. But as with anything worth having, they certainly can be a lot of work. That said, when communication channels are closed off and respectful boundaries get crossed, these same relationships can be sources of resentment, anger, and frustration.

It’s difficult to imagine that there’s anything wrong with our relationships; it might even feel impossible. The dedicated team of therapists at Thriveworks in Waukesha, WI is trained to approach relationship difficulties with comprehensive treatment plans and therapy strategies to produce real results and improve connections between partners. We don’t believe there should be any shame behind a couple choosing to seek mental health services for the benefit of their relationship. In fact, we think it’s indicative of how much they both care about their bond.

Counseling isn’t designed to separate the two of you; it’s designed to provide you with the tools and strategies to work through the roadblocks preventing you from finding new growth together. With a Thriveworks couples therapist or marriage counselor in Waukesha, WI, you can work towards a healthier, happier relationship through prioritizing mental health.

Understanding When Therapy Is Best For Your Relationship

Many couples are proud of the many accomplishments they’ve reached and challenges they’ve endured together; so sometimes reaching outside of their relationship for professional therapy services can be jarring, or even discouraging. Feelings of guilt or a refusal to talk about certain issues can definitely complicate the process, making it difficult to know whether couples or marriage counseling is the right choice.

At Thriveworks in Waukesha, WI, we know the value of getting professional mental health assistance in your relationship. Research shows that 70% of couples who completed relationship counseling experienced significant improvements to their relationship dynamics. We can’t guarantee that therapy alone will fix everything, but finding a couples therapist might make a huge difference.

Some indications that couples therapy could be beneficial include:

  • Constantly arguing with each other
  • Emotional distance, passive-aggressive behavior
  • Attempts to communicate devolving into arguments
  • Unable to agree on next steps like retirement or moving
  • Unable to trust each other, suspicion of
  • Habitual lying
  • Experiencing sexual dysfunction, including a lack of interest in intimacy
  • Coping with the pain of infidelity
  • Independently dealing with symptoms of depression or anxiety
  • Jealousy, possessive behavior

If you are finding that these symptoms describe some of the problems you’re facing at home, turning to the mental health professionals at Thriveworks for relationship therapy could help. As always, attempting to diagnose yourself or your partner with a mental health condition isn’t possible. Treatment and identification of psychological conditions can only be done with the assistance of a licensed mental health professional.

Thriveworks helped me realize that I do believe people can change. I’m not the person I was three months ago, broken and fearful. I’m healthy and happy and for the first time being kind to myself. Thank you for giving me my life back.
