Marriage counseling FAQs

What is marriage counseling?

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy and relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Thriveworks marriage counseling in El Paso, TX is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within Marriage counseling include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular marriage counseling sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is marriage counseling conducted in person or online?

Marriage counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does marriage counseling last?

On average, couples attend marriage counseling for 12 weeks. However, marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress. Marriage counselors and therapists at Thriveworks in El Paso, TX work with their clients to create goals, decide on ideal timelines, and establish treatment plans.

Need more help deciding?

Relationships aren’t a piece of cake. There aren’t many people who would disagree with this statement, as we all encounter our fair share of challenges with our significant others. Consider:

  1. Alexandra and Matt have differing political opinions. This has never been a big deal for either of them, but now that it’s election season, they’re struggling to get along.
  2. Madison and Alec are looking forward to their wedding day, which is just around the corner. However, they both also feel a little nervous about saying “I do.” They know it’s a big commitment and they want to make sure their marriage lasts.
  3. Will and Sarah are madly in love. They can’t imagine their lives without each other now, but there’s a big problem: Sarah’s family doesn’t feel comfortable that Will is agnostic. They are a Catholic family with very strong beliefs, and they want Sarah’s partner to share these beliefs.

The above scenarios are not uncommon. Couples run into a wide variety of challenges throughout their relationships, from differing views and opinions to nerves about getting married or making a bigger commitment, desiring approval from family members, and more.

Marriage counseling and couples therapy are two forms of relationship counseling that help couples work through these and other relationship issues. They are led by skilled, caring, and experienced mental health professionals.

If you and your partner are in need of relationship help, consider reaching out to Thriveworks Counseling in El Paso, TX. Our counselors don’t just possess the skills and experience you’re looking for—they truly care about each and every couple and create a personalized treatment plan for them. If you’d like to set up an appointment for you and your partner, call us now.

Relationship Issues Are Common—Here Are Some of the Most Widespread

The primary reason people choose to meet with a relationship counselor is because they’ve run into a problem that isn’t easy to resolve. The given problem, though, often varies from one couple to the next. You can see this in the examples above.

All of that said, there are common relationship issues that are discussed often during a couple’s time in couples therapy. Here is a list:

  • Poor communication
  • Financial stress or strain
  • Infidelity or reason for trust issues
  • Commitment problems
  • Mental illness
  • Addiction or substance abuse problems
  • Parenting disagreements
  • Differing values or opinions

Have you experienced any of these challenges in your relationship? Were you and your partner able to work through them, or are you still trying to figure out how to manage it?

If you’d like some help, we hope you consider reaching out to Thriveworks Counseling in El Paso, TX. We have counselors who have experience working with couples on a variety of issues that plague their relationships. These professionals know how to lead conversations about these problems and offer tailored help to each of their clients.
