Grief & loss counseling FAQs

What type of counseling is needed when a person cannot get over the grief of losing a loved one?

Grief and loss counseling helps people grieve difficult losses including the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. It helps people navigate their grief process and eventually accept, understand, and move forward from their loss. Thriveworks grief therapists in Buffalo, NY have specific experience, training, and skills that enable them to best support grieving individuals.

How does grief and loss counseling work?

Grief and loss counseling isn’t one-size-fits-all, but it involves sharing about your loss and then working with your counselor to acknowledge and accept your new reality in its wake. Your provider at Thriveworks in Buffalo, NY will design your treatment plan around your unique needs and goals for therapy, applying the counseling techniques that best support them.

Signs I should seek grief counseling

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.

What counseling theory is best for grief?

There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.

Is grief counseling conducted in person or online?

Grief & loss counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does grief counseling last?

For many, grief and loss counseling lasts for about 6 months. For others, it may last shorter or longer, depending on the severity of their loss and their grief.

The ease of being able to speak to my therapist, and I like the fact that she understands me, and gives me feedback!

This is the quality that I remember and appreciate. Michelle is thoughtfully engaged. She asks insightful questions and offers validation with empathy and care. Having bad therapists for the last several months since I saw a Thriveworks therapist in VA reminds me of everything I appreciate about Thriveworks. I feel confident that a Thriveworks therapist is going to offer quality psychotherapy and I am grateful that you are currently building your practice in New York.. the only things I would suggest are related to the change over from another state. I think it makes sense to keep records and therapy from prior states. Streamlining the process would be helpful for the therapist and client. The changeover from VA to NY also impacted my password and my ability to access paperwork and the clinician had to keep checking for the paperwork. Streamlining the state changeover process would be helpful. . At the end of the day, however, I would rather have an excellent clinician experience (which is what I received) even if it meant a less streamlined paperwork process.

Jennifer balances her counseling expertly between talking/educating and listening. I already trust her after just a handful of sessions thanks to her objective feedback and concern. If you need a skilled mental health professional to help guide you thru life’s challenges, you will not be disappointed in Jennifer.

Wendy has been seeing my wife and I for almost two and half years. Her insights into how we both viewed our marriage so differently ultimately helped us both see that we are not the right people for one another. We have unfortunately decided that divorce was the right path forward for us as individuals but counseling made it a healthy, productive journey instead of letting things just fall apart at home. She is now my personal therapist helping me deal with the loss of my marriage. I don’t just appreciate our sessions, but I look forward to them. I take notes and I learn a lot about myself and my growth every time we meet.

I was looking for a new therapist for my teenage son and came across their website. I called to see how long of a waitlist they had, expecting there to be a waitlist. ThriveWorks got my son in within 24 hours! Incredible! My son found a great therapist at ThriveWorks, Mr.Stephen Obrien. This guy has a unique approach and it works for my son. My son actually WANTS to go to therapy. He's getting more out of his sessions than either of us could have hoped for. We found this place at the right time and we couldn't be happier.
