Sigmund Freud—the father of psychoanalysis—is often remembered for his most out-there ideas (you know, like the whole Oedipus complex thing). That said, Freud played a massive role in shaping psychology as we know it, and there are plenty of Sigmund Freud quotes that hold up today, more than eight decades after his death. A quick refresher on Sigmund Freud Freud, born in 1856, started his career in medicine, working in neurology. But over time, he became increasingly interested in the human mind from a psychological perspective: What makes humans act and think and feel the way they do? Through his research, Freud developed the theory that much of human behavior and psychological distress later in life is shaped by “the unconscious,” which refers to our unconscious thoughts, desires, and memories, many of which he believed originated in childhood and may have been repressed. Freud believed in the power of treating mental health through conversation, that talking with a trained professional could be a form of treatment for psychological distress. Freud’s sessions involved free association, where the patient talked freely about anything and everything that came to mind to help uncover meaningful unconscious thoughts, feelings, desires, conflicts, and memories. He also believed that talking about dreams and interpreting them was an important part of psychoanalysis, proposing that dreams were an indication of the unconscious desires and wishes. Other major contributions include diving into understanding the id, ego, and superego, as well as libido. 21 Sigmund Freud quotes about life, love, and psychology It’s no surprise that some of the best psychology quotes of all time come from the father of psychoanalysis. While many of the quotes below are pulled straight from Freud’s own books, essays, and letters, others have been attributed to him for decades—repeated so often they’ve become part of his legend, even when a precise source is hard to pin down. “We are never so defenseless against suffering as when we love.” “Just as no one can be forced into belief, so no one can be forced into unbelief.” “The virtuous man contents himself with dreaming that which the wicked man does in actual life.” “The voice of the intellect is a soft one, but it does not rest until it has gained a hearing. Ultimately, after endless rebuffs, it succeeds. This is one of the few points in which one may be optimistic about the future of mankind.” “The interpretation of dreams is the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious activities of the mind.” “A layman will no doubt find it hard to understand how pathological disorders of the body and mind can be eliminated by ‘mere’ words. He will feel that he is being asked to believe in magic.” “The ego is not master in its own house.” “Thinking… is essentially an experimental kind of acting.” “Out of your vulnerabilities will come your strength.” “Unexpressed emotions will never die. They are buried alive and will come forth later in uglier ways.” “From error to error, one discovers the entire truth.” “One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.” “A man should not strive to eliminate his complexes, but to get into accord with them; they are legitimately what directs his conduct in the world.” “Friendship is an art of keeping distance while love is an art of intimacy.“ “People do not really want freedom, because freedom involves responsibility and most people are frightened of responsibility.” “We are what we are because we have been what we have been, and what is needed for solving the problems of human life and motives is not moral estimates but more knowledge.” “It is a predisposition of human nature to consider an unpleasant idea untrue, and then it is easy to find arguments against it.” “The creative writer does the same as the child at play; he creates a world of fantasy which he takes very seriously.” “When making a decision of minor importance, I have always found it advantageous to consider all the pros and cons. In vital matters, however, such as the choice of a mate or a profession, the decision should come from the unconscious, from somewhere within ourselves. In the important decisions of our personal life, we should be governed, I think, by the deep inner needs of our nature.” “Neurosis is the inability to tolerate ambiguity.” “Being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise.” Thinking about starting therapy?
