My go-to approach for helping people in PTSD/trauma therapy is centered on evidence-based treatments that are tailored to the unique needs of the client. I primarily utilize cognitive behavioral therapy techniques such as cognitive processing and prolonged exposure. These therapies have been shown to be effective in helping individuals process and integrate experiences, reducing symptoms of PTSD, and improving overall functioning.

What tools do you teach in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I teach the following tools in PTSD/trauma therapy:

  • Cognitive processing – which helps individuals learn how to modify and challenge unhelpful beliefs related to the trauma.
  • Prolonged exposure therapy – which involves gradually approaching trauma-related memories, feelings, and situations to learn how to best manage them and that, in many cases, there is no danger that needs to be avoided.
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy – which focuses on the relationships between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and targets changing patterns that lead to difficulties in functioning.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy when:

  • There is a reduction in symptoms.
  • There is improved functioning, seen through the client showing better performance at work, in social situations, and in daily activities.
  • There is increased emotional regulation indicated by the ability to manage and express emotions in a healthier way.
  • There are positive changes in thinking indicated by a shift in perspectives regarding the trauma and their worldview.
  • Enhanced coping skills are developed to effectively handle stress and triggers.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement PTSD/trauma therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in PTSD/trauma therapy with various activities such as journaling, mindfulness practices like meditation or yoga, listening to or creating music, regular physical exercise, and spending time with supportive friends and family.

What should someone do to prepare for starting PTSD/trauma therapy?

To prepare for their first PTSD/trauma therapy session, someone can learn about PTSD and trauma to understand their symptoms and the therapy process; set realistic expectations by understanding that therapy is a process that takes time and effort; compile any relevant medical, psychiatric, or therapy records; consider what they’re comfortable sharing; remember that it’s okay to go at their own pace; and stay open-minded to explore different therapy techniques.
