Divorce counseling FAQs

Is divorce counseling the same as couples counseling?

No. While sometimes couples counseling can lead to both partners deciding to end a relationship or marriage, divorce counseling is specifically about helping married couples separate amicably. Because divorce involves changing legal status, changing lifestyles, making housing adjustments, and often custodial rights to children, divorce counselors at Thriveworks focus on helping partners to prepare with the stress, sadness, and anger that can often precede the divorce process.

Do I need a lawyer to get divorced?

At Thriveworks, we can only provide mental health services and support for couples before, during, and after their separation. We cannot and do not provide clients legal guidance or representation in any court of law. To determine your legal rights and how to best proceed during the divorce process, contact a licensed attorney for further information.

How does divorce impact children and will my child need counseling?

Divorce can have a significant impact on a children of all ages. Your child may benefit from talking to a child therapist at Thriveworks if they’re suffering from sadness, confusion, and insecurity about their parents’ separation. Thankfully, with appropriate support and communication, children can adjust to the changes and still maintain healthy relationships with both parents after divorce.

How will divorce counseling help us?

At Thriveworks, couples in divorce counseling will learn how to communicate effectively and healthily, manage conflicts and intense emotions, and develop strategies for co-parenting and moving forward with their individual lives during and after divorcing and separating from one another.

Is divorce therapy covered by insurance?

Thriveworks works with many different insurance companies and types of insurance plans, but coverage for divorce therapy will still depend on your individual insurance plans and providers. Some insurance plans may only cover sessions deemed medically necessary, while others may not make such a distinction. Check with your insurance provider, or call your local Thriveworks office to help determine if your session costs for divorce therapy are covered.

How long will divorce therapy sessions last?

The duration of your divorce therapy sessions depends on several factors, including your personal and shared goals, the progress made by you and your partner, and how often you can both commit to meeting with your divorce therapist at Thriveworks.
