I am really struggling with shame from the mistakes of the past which lead to PTSD. Any tips to reduce the shame related to the past and ways to stop living in the past.
Greetings A. Nicole,
First, I want you to know that you’re not alone in the way you’re feeling. Too often, we punish ourselves for past mistakes, as if we could somehow, by being hurtful to ourselves, make up the wrong that we’ve done. Shame prevents us from moving on and growing, and can gnaw away at our joy and satisfaction in life.
On Thriveworks.com we have literally thousands of articles, but one of the most visited is an article on a topic that I think applies here, it’s titled “How to Forgive Yourself: Letting go of Past Regrets.” You can find it here: https://thriveworks.com/blog/how-to-forgive-yourself/.
Here’s also a piece on shame, that talks about overcoming your inner bully: https://thriveworks.com/blog/get-out-shame-spiral-engaging-self-talk/.
