Being a caregiver of someone with a mental illness can be very draining and often generates confusion. On one hand, we want the person we are caring for to experience dignity and have as much autonomy as possible. On the other hand, it becomes intolerable for us to continue to observe their poor decisions and self-destructive tendencies of our loved one.
The details of each individual situation are usually to involved and complicated for a generic answer. That’s where a trained therapist who can hear your specific story can be helpful in giving suggests and being a sounding board to issues that address your specific needs. However, it is often amazing and refreshing to experience how much support and encouragement a trained therapist can bring to a caregiver.
