There are actually many. One woman I know was devastated when, after asking her husband to go to counseling to work on their marriage, he responded that he wanted a divorce. Her resulting self-doubt and blow to her self-image consumed her.
However, after receiving counseling for several sessions, she began to identify strengths that she either did not know she had or that she had forgotten she had. Focusing on her strengths, she re-connected with old friends and made new ones, male and female. Their support and affirmation reinforced her strengths and enhanced her self image.
Eventually, one of these old friends expressed a romantic interest in this woman and they now have a very healthy and happy relationship. She is also glad that, although she wants this relationship, she doesn’t need it to feel fulfilled as a person. She feels confident and fulfilled being a person of strength and confidence. This was not how she identified herself during her previous relationship.
