Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I became a counselor because I wanted to make a positive difference in people's lives. I've also always been interested in people's stories and why people are the way they are. I like helping clients discover patterns of behavior in their lives and what led them to make certain choices. As a clinician, I can provide a listening ear, help with coping skills, and support clients in need.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients who are motivated and open to exploring themselves. I also work very well with older children, teens, and young adults. I specialize in anxiety and depression and also work well with clients struggling with relationships, self-esteem, life transitions, and grief.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I'm most excited to work with preteens, teens and young adults struggling with depression, anxiety, or issues with family/relationships.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients knew that the process and length of therapy is different for every client. At times, therapy can touch on sensitive or painful topics. Although it might be unpleasant to face these topics, it is only through facing our challenges in life that we can learn how to cope and move forward.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose to practice at Thriveworks because of how established the practice is and the variety of clients available. I was also impressed that Thriveworks offers psychiatric services and testing for clients in-house, as it can be very hard to find an outside psychiatrist or psychological testing where there isn't a long waitlist.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I am a very empathetic individual and try and meet clients where they are at rather than dictating what they need to work on. I can provide structure if needed, but generally I try to work with clients and follow their lead rather than insisting on a rigid agenda. Clients should know that I provide feedback in a direct and honest manner, while also being sensitive and compassionate.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
In my free time, I love seeing films, so I'll often see movies on the weekends and have dinner with friends. I also really enjoy live theater, particularly plays or musicals. I enjoy going to different cultural events in the city, such as Chinese New Year, Fiesta Del Sol, Arts in the Dark Halloween Parade, etc. I am a member of a number of social groups including: second city karaoke league, Anime Chicago, Chicago Dr. Who Meetup, and a monthly book club. I also take art classes and enjoy photography. I also volunteer at Paws Chicago, an animal shelter in the city.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)
I am a conscientious person and when I am committed to something, I give one hundred percent.
What inspires you?
I'm inspired when clients tells me when something I suggested helps them. I'm inspired when a client gets insight into a problem they have been having, when they get the "aha" moment. I'm also inspired when I really connect with a client, and they let me know that they feel understood. Outside of work, I'm inspired by beautiful music and nature, and people who have overcome tremendous adversity.
