About Gretchen
Gretchen Phillips is a genderfluid (they/she), queer, white, neurodivergent, non-disabled, Millennial woman and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 8 years of experience. She specializes in working with queer and trans individuals to navigate unique experiences of coming out, safety, sexual and romantic relationships, and belonging. Gretchen has experience addressing with all genders and orientations concerns about anxiety, trauma processing and recovery, systemic oppression, sexual assault recovery, and identity exploration.
Gretchen holds a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. Their training in interpersonal psychodynamic therapy fosters a relationship that is dialogic and collaborative, integrating interventions from mindfulness and Gestalt therapy, psychoanalysis, dialectic behavior therapy, and cognitive behavior therapy.
Working together with Gretchen creates opportunities to build the skills and practices necessary to take authority over life, including increased confidence and self-esteem, maintaining healthy interpersonal boundaries, and building new neural pathways that concretize the change any individual wants to see and be.

"I am continually learning how Queerness permeates not just our intimate relationships, but the entirety of how we move through the world, how we grow, and how we foster change."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I believe every individual has the right to a joyous, fulfilling life. For many of us, life is also met with experiences of loss, mistreatment, neglect, t/Trauma, and systemic oppression that make us believe otherwise. I want to help change that. I am committed to anti-racism and dismantling white supremacy, especially examining the intersections of how misogyny, misogynoir, ableism, fatphobia/body terrorism, cis/het norms, and capitalism continue to tread over the marginalized global majority; and exacerbate our disconnections from ourselves and one another to increase our profitability. I became a therapist because I believe that one-on-one relationships that build trust and acceptance are foundational to begin healing these ancient wounds.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I tend to work with LGBTQAI+ adults aiming to: explore and expand their identity, increase their insight & understanding of themselves, practice mindfulness to observe & engage somatic signals in the body, improve communication & relationships, and fully actualize the lives they want.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all therapy participants knew that they can swear in-session! How the ***** else are we to extend our own verbal self-expression?!
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I choose to practice at Thriveworks because they offer exceptional practitioner support that assures I can show up to each session feeling prepared, rested, and confident to help.
What inspires you?
I am inspired most by the humor of life: playfulness, improvisation, seeing the rainbow for the storm, wordplay and irony, and the ways that you always seem to find something (or it finds you) once you've stopped seeking it. Also: Megan Thee Stallion.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Therapy participants can expect that in our first session, I would like most to know how I can be of help. Sometimes your stories will involve things that happened today or within the past week, and sometimes they requires greater context for years of relationships and experiences. The first session or two together will probably feel like establishing the main pillars or figures of our therapeutic alliance: what are the main issues to address, what are your 'North Star' goals, and how are you currently viewing your progress toward these objectives?
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In a first session, we will establish one or two participant-centered goals, we will identify a provisionary diagnosis that will guide our treatment plan, and we will establish 'housekeeping' logistics such as how to communicate cancellations or what to expect should either of us experience a power/internet outage during a session.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I operate best with written communications such as emails and texts, especially for items such as endorsement letter requirements or complex scheduling needs.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Outside of my work as a therapist, I spend much of my leisure time cooking & baking, exercising, playing video games, taking long walks with my partner throughout the city, and consuming all types of media and pop culture. I am an enthusiastic member of the Beyhive, though I am freshly obsessed with the Irish rap group Kneecap.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Most colleagues and friends know me to be "The Astrology Person" in their lives. I will disclose that I'm a Sagittarius sun ;)
