Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I always gravitated towards helping professions and realized, through my everyday interactions with others, I felt most fulfilled when I was able to connect with someone at a deeper level. My calling to the counseling profession, however, became more salient when I read On Becoming a Person by Carl Rogers in my Introduction to Counseling class back in undergraduate study. After reading it, I knew I wanted to make a living by helping others.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work well with all types of clients from diverse backgrounds. I consider myself to be a generalist, so I'm happy to work with clients seeking help for a broad range of needs.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I get most excited working with motivated and open-minded clients who are wanting change. Even if that's not you, I'm confident I can help you identify what's stifling your motivation and figure out some possible solutions to what you may be struggling with. Counseling is an interesting profession where no guarantees can be made about the outcome because it is dependent on many factors outside of the clinician's control. However, the clients I see that tend to make the most growth are those who are motivated, open to the process and ready to do the work.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
No feeling is final and thoughts are not facts.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thirveworks provides me the support I need so I can focus on what I do best, counseling.
What inspires you?
Acts of goodwill, people working together to resolve problems and help one another, and being in nature.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
First sessions are all about getting familiar and building rapport, understanding what led the client into counseling and what goals the client hopes to accomplish through the counseling process. I'll ask questions to get to know you, the challenges you are facing and what you hope to be different following our sessions together. I'll also review informed consent and any assessments that may need to be completed.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
My goals for the first session are to establish a connection with you, understand what motivated you to come to counseling and what you hope to achieve through the counseling process.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I "fill my cup up" by spending quality time with my family, working in the garden, getting a round of golf in when I can and exploring new hiking trails.
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I don't believe any one thing defines me. Rather, I believe that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
