Get to know Ronah Chanelle

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I started off as a nursing major in college, but quickly realized my heart wasn’t in that field. I decided to take a chance and just change my career path to psychology/counseling and never looked back. While I was interning at a hospital in college, I was learning counseling techniques and learning more about people and how to guide them through life. During this internship, I was told by patients that I really helped them get out of a dark time and was thanked for changing their lives. This gave me a purpose in this career-to see the positive change in others through my guidance. Growing up, I never had someone to guide me through life’s difficulties, so I wanted to be that light for others when they are trying to sail through a dark storm.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I work best with anxiety and depression clients, but I have experience working with all mental health related issues such as bipolar, personality disorders, schizophrenia, substance use, anger, relationship issues, trauma and more.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I am excited to work with all clients! My most favorite types of client are the ones who feel they do not have a purpose and have those suicidal thoughts of not wanting to be here anymore. Working with these clients and watching them grow from not having a purpose or wanting to live- to developing a sense of purpose, increasing happiness, and increasing life satisfaction, gives me great joy and purpose in this field.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish that all clients knew that the healing process takes time! Many of us feel discouraged when our feelings or thoughts or life itself doesn’t seem like it is going the way we want to or improving. But being patient is key to healing.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I chose to practice at Thriveworks because their mission statement aligned with my beliefs and goals as a therapist- to help people live happy and successful lives! I am very passionate about my career as a counselor and really admire its style of being a private practice group with the additional support from the team!

What inspires you?

My clients inspire me every single day. Seeing my clients grow and develop a sense of purpose gives me that inspiration, joy, and my own sense of purpose to help others by working in this field. Seeing my clients work hard to be the very best that they can be reflects on me where I also want to be the very best that I can be.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

I have a tendency to ask a lot of questions in the first session so that I can truly learn more about you, support you, and develop a plan with how I can guide you through your life challenges.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

I want to truly work on the individual feeling comfortable in their first session. Therapy can be scary! My goal is to try to help the client feel comfortable in therapy by allowing them to share anything they want in that first session and slowly working on building that trust.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

Clients should know that I am here to support you and guide you in your healing process, but know that I am not here to judge you or to make you feel bad about not accomplishing your goals or about your situations. Clients should also know that I am very solution focused in my modalities of treatment.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I like to go to the gym, take my dogs to the dog park, and try new restaurants with friends on my time off!

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

I am a driven individual who isn't afraid to face a challenge. I tend to be passionate about things I love and I would describe myself as an open and honest person who doesn't believe in misleading other people and tries to be fair in everything I do.
