Get to know James
Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I started counseling in the 5th grade when I became part of the peer helpers and followed through in Junior High and High school when those programs became available. It has always been a part of me.
What types of clients do you work with best?
Clients willing to work. Inside the session at first and then outside as they become able.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
Clients who keep trying. Learning new skills takes practice. The first few times you try to apply they may not work at all or only a little bit.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Cookie cutter approaches rarely work. We start broad scale and individualize as we go along. It can be hard sometimes to figure out what doesn't work for you and what is resistance or struggling to implement new habits.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
In the first session I like to discuss self-care (sleep, exercise, diet, boundaries and fun), the issues the client is with which the client is struggling, and developing a plan.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
Ways to improve self-scare and a plan. Things for the client to start working on if they are able to work outside of the sessions.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Video Games, Reading, Movies, Paintball/Airsoft, fishing (not catching) target shooting.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Christian
