Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I got a calling from God to pursue pastoral counseling. Due to limited positions in a church, I decided to work in agencies after I got my license. My position pre-COVID was working with unhoused individuals for 20 years.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I like to work with clients who are willing to partner with me to transform their lives. I can give clients the information, but it is up to them to work on learning new skills.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I get excited when my clients have accepted the challenge to learn the new skills and applied to them to their lives and their lives have changed for the better. I love to see the smile on their faces when they do this. It really boils down to they have learned to be their own counselor.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
It is okay to ask for help. There may be some pain on the journey, but it is worth it when my clients get to the other side and see the changes they have made.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I was talking to a therapist friend of mine about somethings and she mentioned she worked for Thriveworks and encouraged me to apply. I looked at the website and decided to reach out.
What inspires you?
My clients. I learn so much from them. My family inspires me especially my granddaughters.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I will send my new client several handouts at the end of the intake session. The information contained in those handouts help set a foundation for our work together. The first few sessions include a good bit of psychoeducation about cognitive behavioral therapy and the connection between the body, brain, and mind.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to instill hope so the clients feel they can reduce the amount of distress they are feeling. I want them to know they have the power to change their lives.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I believe that all people have a purpose in life. Also they are valuable people. I believe that the clients who come to me were chosen for us to meet.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I take voice lessons. I sing at activities in my apartments. I like to write short stories. I like to draw and paint. I enjoy time with my family.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I am a good grandma. I like having my granddaughters over to spend the night. I enjoy staying with them when their parents are out of town. I enjoy going to their activities.
