Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I enjoy being a small part of someone's story or journey toward positive change. I find that it takes a lot of courage to be able to open up to someone about hardships, so I feel honored when clients take that leap. What I truly enjoy about being a counselor is that I get to meet extraordinarily resilient people and watch folks meet their goals.
What types of clients do you work with best?
Therapy can be scary, especially if you've never sought counseling before, so it can be hard to open up. However, if clients have a willingness to make change then that shows great motivation. I work best with clients that want to put forth the effort and work toward their goals.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am most excited to work with clients that enjoy being creative in the therapy process. I enjoy adjusting my approach based on clients individual needs, personalities, and goals. For instance, if a client processes better visually, then I might incorporate drawing exercises. I get excited when clients and I think outside the box.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
Emotions tell us what we need. If we don't know how to identify emotions or respond to emotions, we don't get what we need. So, it's important to recognize asking for help or guidance about difficult emotions, or other challenges, is not shameful or weak. Seeking out counseling indicates you care about your well-being and building your emotional/mental skills.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I enjoy the hybrid model Thriveworks provides. Clients can choose what is most accessible for them. Ever since Covid19, it has emphasized the need for more virtual based care. I also appreciate clients can search for therapists via detailed biographies on Thriveworks. This way clients can find therapists that best fit them as the rapport built with a clinician is very important.
What inspires you?
My family, they have always been embracing of mental health and encourage self-care. My family inspires me to spread the message of mental health importance. Clients inspire me as well when they start to see growth. Not only do clients learn about themselves, but I learn alongside with them.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I am always curious, so my first session is gathering a bunch of information about a client. The first session is simply getting know each other. I make sure it feels more like a conversation than interview, because first encounters can be intimidating. I ensure clients feel safe and comfortable in the first meeting with empathy, compassion, and positivity.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to learn about you in the first session such as your goals, strengths, concerns, expectations, etc. However, overall I want to build rapport and trust as this is the most important component in therapy.
