About Arlie
Arlie is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Registered Play Therapist (RPT) in the state of Texas. His career has spanned from working with adults seeking help with life adjustments, depression, PTSD, trauma, domestic abuse, and survivors of sexual abuse. As a play therapist, he has worked in public schools and foster care with children needing support with ADHD, adjustment disorders, trauma, abuse, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and behavioral concerns.
Arlie received his Bachelor’s degree from Excelsior University while on active duty and completed his Master of Arts counseling and play therapy certification from Regis University in Denver, CO. He is a retired military veteran with 26 years of service and over 7 years of professional counseling experience. Arlie uses several treatment approaches to meet the individual needs of each client. He is a person-centered clinician who believes in establishing a trusting relationship coupled with a genuine concern for the client’s needs. As an RPT, Arlie uses a child-centered play therapy approach. Children often cannot express themselves verbally; therefore, play can be used to help them express concerns while using toys for their words. While his baseline approach with adults is person-centered, he also uses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy, and sand tray therapy dependent on the individual’s particular needs.
Arlie believes everyone has a solution to their problems but sometimes they need support in finding it. He will meet you where you are with honor, with total regard to your concerns, and without judgment. Arlie genuinely would like to help you travel through life with success, dignity, and purpose. He is ready to meet you where you are on life's journey and believes broken crayons can still color.
Please note that only clients 15 and above can be scheduled via Telehealth all clients 14 and below should schedule in person.

"I relate to my clients with compassion, empathy, and positive regard while meeting them where they are on life's journey."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
After I completed my military career I felt a need to continue helping others and after a year of comtemplation I decided to become a counselor. I based my decision on the fact I had been leading and helping others through very emotional and challenging times in their lives. I've always loved talking to people of all walks of life and counseling was a perfect fit for me.
What types of clients do you work with best?
At first, I wanted to help veterans but soon realized I had a passion for helping other populations as well. I decided to advance my degree and become a registered play therapist after working with with children. I also found an interest in working with the elderly who are contemplating end of life decisions or needing to process past life events. I've worked best with veterans who have PTSD, children with a number of behavioral concerns (e.g. ADHD, anxiety, depression, grief and loss), and people who are survivors of sexual abuse, trauma, and domestic abuse.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am excited to work with clients who are seeking to improve their lives. Therapy is not always exciting for clients and my job is to help guide them into a direction of positive thinking and success. I do enjoy play therapy and it always excites me to see the progress children make in therapy. Additionally, I understand military and first responder's trauma from first hand experience which always gives me a sense of excitement and eagerness to be a helper. Lastly, I have enjoyed working with elderly clients who need support in making end of life care decisions and processing past trauma which may have existed for years. Our life experiences are not always exciting but making our lives better through helping one another can ignite a goal of becoming excited about the here and now.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
My primary motivation as your therapist is your wellbeing and together we tackle the hardest challenges life brings.
What inspires you?
Quite simply, people inspire me. I try to see the good in everyone and those who feel down find their own strengths. People are amazing! Everyday I see person who provides inspiration to my life in some capacity.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
The first therapy session is very similar to the first time that you meet anyone else. I'll have a lot of questions for you that you'll need to answer truthfully to have the best experience. We are not going to dive right into the tough questions but rather start building a trusting positive regard relationship together.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to start getting to know you as a client in our first session. There will be some initial paperwork similiar to the forms at a doctor's office so this may take some time to complete. I want to know what brought you to counseling , what you hoping to accomplish through counseling, and know what your concerns about counseling might be like, or questions you’d like to ask. I also will explain confidentiality and your rights as a client.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
As a Child Centered Play Therapist I only see children under 15 years old in-person. I want you to know before you schedule with me that we are a team. I am non-judgemental and will give you positive regard to any life challenge you are facing or bring to session. Therapy is not always a fast paced solution and often it takes time to complete the goals you have set. Your first session marks the starting point of a journey to a better, more successful way of life.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love to cook, swim, spend time with my family, and watch college football. I also enjoy arts and crafts, completing hard jigsaw puzzles, and watching movies; especially Marvel movies.
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
My character defines me. I am compassionate, creative, conscientious, flexible, honest, humble, honorable, loyal, patient, persistent, resilient, curious, and motivated by my work. I enjoy helping others find their strengths and build on their character.
