About Provider

About Abraham Abe

Abe Clabby is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who specializes in treating relationship issues, workaholism, trauma, codependency, depression, anxiety, autism, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Abe spent the last 6 years at the Love Is Respect hotline and the National Domestic Violence Hotline, where he has seen the best and the worst that family and relationships have to offer. He is the author of "Cool Off the Burnout: Feel Better at High-Pressure Jobs".

Abe completed his master's degree in Counseling at St. Edward's University, where he earned a 3.7 GPA and spent an extra semester taking courses in marriage and family therapy. In postgraduate training like the Gottman method, Abe found what some couples do that makes them thrive. There are things that help with a partner, but they also help with our parents, our jobs, and our friends. Abe uses motivational interviewing in a client-centered way, empowering people to change the narrative and find an existential purpose for what they do and using the tools of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to get around the obstacles where people feel stuck.

Abe works with a lot of good-hearted people. They're compassionate and want to do good in the world and to help people they love. Caring people can be taken for granted, taken advantage of, and even hurt and used. They can be left feeling empty, unfulfilled, and unloved. But with the right mindset, boundaries, and self-care, they can be respected, appreciated, and live a life that they're proud of. Abe helps people care for others and in turn, care for themselves. With therapy, people can troubleshoot their troubles in jobs and relationships. Everyone has more options than they realize.

Get to know Abraham Abe

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

I'm the kind of person people open up to. Those are the most important talks people ever have. But I wanted to understand people better - why they were thinking & feeling & acting the way they were. Being honest, I also wanted to understand myself. It got me out of depression, from co-dependency, and made life with Autism & ADHD so much better.

What types of clients do you work with best?

People who want to know themselves. They may know a lot already, but people see different things in each other.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

People wanting to move from one-sided relationships to something more mutual. People learning Assertiveness, Boundaries, & Closeness. Hard-working people who pour themselves all into their goals and then feel empty - who could use something for balance.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

You're not gonna get better by putting yourself down. It's not "I'm not good enough," it's "I want to take the next step." That's empowering. Everyone's more motivated by the positive.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

Man was not meant to live alone. I like being able to compare notes & check in with other helpers. We pick up on things from each other.

What inspires you?

Realizing we have something in common that we never would've known just by looking at them.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

You'll say "I'm sorry, I'm all over the place," and I'll say "Nah, no worries, this'll all be useful later. You're painting the picture." And sure enough, most of it will come up again in another session, and it'll help figure something out.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

Help them feel transparent - like they can admit anything to me & themselves. And give them something they can use to help until next week.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

Play with my Pre-K kids, make witty banter with my wife, and...is it 11:00 already? Welp, see you tomorrow!
