Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I was working towards my Bachelors in Psychology when I experienced a loss in my own life. This was not something I felt I could cope with on my own and reached out to a counselor myself. This experience was life changing for me. I learned to cope with my grief and continue to live a functional and productive life. This led me to think about my next steps after my bachelors degree. I decided that I wanted to help others in a way that my counselor helped me, leading me to pursue my Master's degree and becoming a licensed professional counselor.
What types of clients do you work best with?
My approach is person-centered CBT, with an emphasis on building a strong therapeutic relationship and creating a safe, supportive space for open dialogue. Rather than following a strict agenda, I tailor each session to meet clients where they are and focus on what feels most meaningful and relevant to them.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
I am conversational (person centered) in most sessions. The first session tends to be a little different though, as I will ask questions about your background, what brought you to therapy, etc. as well as tell you about myself so that we can get to know each other before diving in!
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
I wish my clients knew that therapy is not to "fix them" because they are not broken. Therapy is to help the client understand their concerns and manage them and cope in a healthier manner.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
My own experience as a therapy client has greatly informed my work as a provider. Having been on the other side of the process, I understand the vulnerability it takes to show up and the importance of feeling seen, heard, and supported. This perspective allows me to approach my client's with empathy, authenticity, and a strong commitment to creating a safe and nonjudgmental space.
