Get to know Laura
Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I decided to become a counselor because working and getting to know other people appealed to me. I love watching people grow and learn to identify their strengths.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work really well with clients that are interested in learning more about themselves. Therapy is a great way to learn what our values are and what we find important in life.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I enjoy working with clients that are new to therapy and haven't yet learned how incredible the experience can be.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
That they are stronger than they think they are.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I wanted the ability to meet with clients where they're at. Having come from a state-run community mental health center, I often felt rushed when working with clients and didn't have the time I felt clients really needed to make progress.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by the strength of others. I have often found that clients don't realize or see their strengths and it inspires me to see them recognize this.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I want to get to know you first and vice versa. I want clients to feel comfortable with me and the therapy process.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to build rapport and find out what the clients want out of the therapy process. Many clients come into therapy thinking they need help with one thing and quickly figure out they really need help with something else.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I'm laid back and don't want my clients to feel rushed. I want to get to know you first so I'll probably ask a lot of questions about their lives.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love to go camping and spend time with my husband and my dogs. I like to visit thrift shops and learn about history.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Genuine.
