Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I'm not exactly sure of the moment that I decided, but I always loved helping people and I was a "problem solver". When entering college, I wanted to major in Psychology, but I was told that "there are no jobs for psychology majors". I ended up taking classes that sounded interesting to me and by the time I had to declare a major, I only needed a couple more classes to Double-Major in Health Administration and Communications. After College, I worked at a research hospital, but I soon realized that I needed "more" for my career path. I applied and was accepted to Graduate School for Counseling Education. It was the perfect fit and the best career decision I've ever made!
What types of clients do you work with best?
Therapists that have not been through every issue that their client has, is still able to successfully counsel and help their clients through those challenges. Although for me, I do find that I make a connection and build a rapport more quickly with clients that have a similar background as I do.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I get excited/passionate about working and helping clients that are open to reevaluating their lives and willing to do the tough work that may include digging a little into their history, in order to make better, more healthy decisions in the future. I feel that I have a lot of knowledge and skills that can help so many clients improve their lives and lead a happy life.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish people in general knew how freeing "talk therapy" can be. Although access to and the stigma of Mental Health, has improved greatly, there is still a belief or misconception that seeing a Counselor is "weak" or it's "talking to a stranger". Also, I would like for potential clients to know that if you meet with a counselor and it doesn't feel "comfortable" or "normal" on the first visit, try again. There are counselors that someone is going to "click" with, and some that they are not. Don't give up! There are so many great counselors out there!
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
As a longtime professional in this business, I was so excited to find a company like Thriveworks. I chose to practice with Thriveworks because their model of Psychiatric Care, not only makes sense, but it represents everything I believe about Mental Health access and quality care. Providing Counseling and Psychiatric care through multiple avenues and professionals opens the door for so many people.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by strength and resilience. My life hasn't taken the easiest path, but the most difficult things, are the ones that have shaped my strength and independence. One of my favorite quotes is "Your mistakes don't define your character. It's what you choose to do after you have made the mistake that makes all the difference."
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
For our first session together, we will talk about what goals you want to accomplish in therapy, whether it be to communicate better, improve relationships or all of the above! The first session can sometimes feel disorganized, but I like for our first conversation to move organically. You will tell me whatever you want about your feelings and the issues you are dealing with and I will gather some background information.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
My main goal for the first session is to build rapport and a foundation of trust with you. My hope is that you to leave feeling that you have been heard, and that it provides relief to you in some way. I also hope that you feel positive and proud that you have taken the first step towards improving yourself. I always want my clients to leave our session together with a new tool to use or a thought that they can utilize and practice in their lives.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
Although there is formal information that needs to be gathered during the first session, I otherwise, will let you guide the conversation and redirect if needed. There is no "rule" or "format" for the first session. If we don't cover your background/history in the first session, it's ok, we will get to it.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
My children keep me pretty busy, but I try to ensure that I block of some "me" time. Some things that I enjoy are gardening, painting furniture, searching for vintage furniture/accessories. These activities tap into my creative side and provide immediate gratification of accomplishment! When I need to feel revitalized, I get a massage or go to a quiet place on the water.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
As I mentioned above, I have been faced with some very hard life situations, and the way that I overcame them, defines me most. Those situations have and continue to build my strength and independence. My history does not define me, but it does shape me.
