About Nicole
My name is Nicole Lyman (she/they). I am a Licensed Associate Professional Counselor with 2 years of experience working with young adults, adults, and seniors. I seek to explore strengths and personalized goals to cope more effectively with life's challenges as well as move towards resilience and growth. My ideal clients experience a range of issues, often rooted in chronic stress or trauma, including anxiety, depression, adjustment issues, life transitions, trauma/PTSD, relationships, self-esteem, or grief. I also have experience working with clients identifying as LGBTQIA+ and individuals on the autism spectrum.
I have a background in mindfulness, trauma-informed, and social justice approaches meaning you can expect focus on exploring a wholistic view of yourself and presenting concerns. Collaboratively, I support clients defining what growth and resilience mean to them and building towards meaningful engagement with life and improved sense of one's own strengths.
The first step in growth is accepting the need for change. Therapy is a place to reflect on ourselves and our complex identities, experiences, and goals.

"As a queer therapist working from a trauma informed and social justice lens, I understand the importance of how our life experiences and current contexts deeply impact our mental health experiences."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I understand that life circumstances and challenges will effect us all at some point, and the world is not set up in a way to support individuals in finding healthy coping skills or support networks. Through therapeutic work, I work to empower clients to support themselves, and those they love, in the complex and challenging world they are navigating.
What types of clients do you work best with?
I work best with clients who are willing to step away from the perspective of pathology or mental illness. While one may experience symptoms of a formal diagnosis, I believe everyone is a healthy, brilliant human who is likely struggling with the systems and dynamics of modern life. Additionally, I work well with clients with long-standing complex symptoms and traumas. Through mindfulness and "bottom up" processing, sessions can look and feel very different than past talk therapy experiences that may not have worked for you.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
I am personally informed through a blend of social justice and Eastern practices. These perspectives inform my practice by looking at individuals within their social, cultural, & historical contexts, while also incorporating mind-body awareness, spiritual empowerment, and wholistic health.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
First sessions are ran differently than typical counseling sessions. Expect to spend time helping me get to know you as a whole person, not just the presenting concern you are hoping to work on! Your strengths, unique qualities, and intersectional experiences are important to understand in the therapeutic context.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
I wish all clients knew that it is normal, and even expected, to struggle from time to time. Most often, our greatest strengths and skills can be found in these difficult moments. Therapy also does not have to feel so serious or rigid, the healing process is self-defined.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
My background in yoga and Buddhist psychology has some of the greatest influence on my practice. Acceptance is as important as striving for growth. Additionally, my practice often involves some degree of somatic work.
