Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I was groomed at an early age (11 years old) by my family members, about
the value of helping. I helped with a young male being cared for by my
mother who was a nurse. My oldest sister was a nurse, so I had additional
exposure to patient care. In 1977, I was a student of professional Registered
Nursing, and had a rotation as a senior Nursing Student on a psychiatric unit,
and my experience “sealed the deal”. I loved Psychiatric Nursing. My
grandmother was compassionate about helping, which was inspirational to
me.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
How resilient they are, by surviving trauma, and other mental health crisis,
and from those experiences adaptive skills were learned to help them
survive. Therapists are in place, to help them unravel and process negative
experiences, and teach a new way of coping with life’s setbacks and
conditions.
What inspires you?
I am inspired when a person/s I provide/ed services for express to me, that
his/her life is better, and there is no more suffering, or distress.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Setting an atmosphere that promotes safety, warmth, and trust is first.
Followed by a discussion about who I am, and then offering an opportunity to
answer questions as needed.
Clients can expect full disclosure about confidentiality limitations; questions
will be answered that are concerning to them, regarding my skills, plans
about what to expect; my expectations
.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first
session?
I hope there is at least the beginning of trust, and establishment of a working
relationship
.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first
counseling session?
Clients should know that I stand by the ethical standards, and codes of
professional practice, with individuals who are vulnerable and dependent on
someone to trust, listen to help them get through difficult times. Additionally,
I have dedicated my life to helping restore the quality of life, one person at a
time.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I enjoy reading about recent research, effective interventions, viewing
documentaries, and socializing.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I spend my time working on whether progress has been made during the
treatment process, based on the treatment plan goals my time is spent
planning what should be addressed in the next session
.
