About Provider

About Christine

Chris McGowan is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) who works with older adolescents and adults, always striving to view her clients through a compassionate lens to assist in understanding the client as a whole person, viewing their life experiences, values, and individual needs. She is effective in supporting clients who struggle with self-esteem, depression, anxiety, ADHD, parental strategies, grief, trauma, Trichotillomania/BFRBs (body-focused repetitive behaviors), relationships, and change of life transitions at any age. Chris is an LBGTQ+-affirming clinician.

The positive energy Chris brings to sessions, along with her desire to support others and her ability to put people at ease, can make the most apprehensive clients feel grounded during sessions. This supportive and open relationship will be a bridge to help clients achieve a better understanding of themselves as they work toward their goals.

Pulling from an eclectic mix of therapeutic modalities, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and motivational interviewing are some of the approaches that Chris utilizes. If you are finding that life’s challenges are starting to build up, or you are repeating patterns that are no longer working, please reach out for a consultation.

Get to know Christine

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I decided to become a therapist because I saw a need for people to feel heard without judgments. I enjoy supporting and observing individuals grow and achieve the goals they have set for themselves through their hard work and self-discovery. I am honored to be able to hold a safe space for individuals who might want to process and begin to find a sense of healing from their negative experiences or traumas.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I believe anyone who shows up for therapy is someone I can work with and support. All clients come to therapy at different stages of change. As a clinician, I can assist with exploring their stage of change, and meet them where they are at, while offering suggestions along the way when appropriate. Creating goals, keeping clients on track, offering coping skills and collaboratively discovering solutions together can be a great way to motivate clients. It allows them to see that they have the tools to tackle the challenges that might have brought them into therapy.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I think all clients are unique and their needs can be so different, which can be exciting. Some clients need more support with self-esteem, others may need to understand their negative self-talk, exploring past traumas, hurtful interpersonal relationships, or understand their anxiety and depressive symptoms. Others may be struggling because they have not properly managed their ADHD or are newly diagnosed and may need to understand how to manage their time, emotional impulsivity, or motivation to complete tasks that they may procrastinate on. My job is to assess, assist or pivot while offering clients what they may need in the moment and shift to a different modality if a new life event happens or new stressors come to the forefront while sessions are happening.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

I wish all clients knew that change can and does happen. Change may not come as fast as they would like, but it will happen. They can make change happen when they work towards applying the skills and insights they gain while in therapy to their everyday life. When they do the hard work, in and out of session, change does happen.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

Thriveworks offered the opportunity for me to continue to support my clients over telehealth sessions. I believe this format can be very effective with the right clients. The telehealth platform offers more opportunities for individuals to have sessions when it is convenient for them. Thriveworks has a lot of supports in place to assist in creating a growth mindset, even for those individuals who may not be in the office.

What inspires you?

Learning and growing from that knowledge. Helping others. Fun experiences, traveling and adventures. The many colors in nature that are unique in different places. Early morning walks. The love and support from others who understand me. Achieving personal goals and trying new things that may be hard. A child laughing and playing.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

A client can expect to be greeted with warmth and compassion. Being offered a safe space to begin to decompress. Exploring ways that therapy could be useful for the client, discussion of clients expectations or misconceptions and sharing information that the client may be interested in understanding to allow them to make the most of their therapy sessions.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

The main goal would be to begin to build a foundation for a strong therapeutic relationship that could allow the client to feel understood and heard.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?

It may help for clients to understand that I am here to support them. I have a balanced approach with my clients in session. I value the client's self-expertise. I am simply here to work alongside them and assist with their own self-discovery. These are their sessions, and I would never push a client to share more than they are comfortable sharing.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I enjoy going to new places. Skiing in the winter. Taking walks/hiking. Swimming, going to the beach. Watching home shows. Listening to audio books. Spending time with others.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

I believe the one thing that has defined me my whole life is my positive attitude. Having a positive attitude allows me to see the possibilities in any situation. Sometimes it is about being creative and believing in trying something a different way.
