Get to know Andrew

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

After random conversations with friends, I'd often hear, "you'd make a good counselor." I think that they found that having someone genuinely interested in their personal experiences to be beneficial for them. Since studying psychology and philosophy in college, I think counseling is the perfect environment to combine the two.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I consider myself in constant growth in the counseling profession. I haven't worked with every "type" of client to consider some better to work with than others. However, life transitions have a sneaky way of making us question deeper things. They might be considered "normal" by others and so, overlooked. This can lead to other issues such as anxiety or depression which pervade various aspects of our lives. I like working with people who find themselves questioning deeper parts of themselves.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I get excited to work with people who are curious about themselves and their relationships. Asking genuine, thoughtful, and sometimes difficult questions are often more valuable than brainstorming potential solutions.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

It gets better.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I chose to practice at Thriveworks because of how large and interconnected the organization is. As counselors, we have access to a network of other counselors to consult with and grow in our practice of helping others.

What inspires you?

Relationships inspire me. I often think that if I were stranded on a desert island, I wouldn't last very long. When I have someone to work with or someone who relies on me in some way, I find it easier to get organized, dig deep, and make things happen.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

First sessions can be a bit intimidating for people new to counseling. I tend to guide first sessions more than subsequent sessions in order to develop realistic expectations for therapy.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

During a first session, I would review informed consent with my client(s) and address any questions they may have about therapy together. I would also complete an intake and treatment plan coactively with my client.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I like to play music and spend time with my dog.

What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

I am empathetic
