Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I learned early in life that change is constant and unpredictable. Facing life's challenges alone often results in highly reactive shifts of avoidance, and not always in the best of directions. By setting time aside for reflection and processing with someone whose sole purpose is to be a witness and thoughtful guide through life's difficulties, I've come to realize that my approach to problem solving, along with ongoing professional development, has led me to a 30 year career of helping others.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I enjoy working with adults and couples who are ready for change, and who are willing to look critically at how they make decisions, and who are willing to engage in the necessary steps toward a better life and relationships.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
Anyone who is ready to explore how to become their own agent of change for a better life.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
In a world filled with rapid pleasures and quick fixes, often the realization that all change is incremental, a consistent combination of small daily steps, is that "ah ha" moment of insight, when a person understands that they too can achieve the change they seek.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks brings the best from the history of in-person counseling into the digital world. At Thriveworks, the ability to work with clients over an extended period of time, helps the client and the therapist solidify gains made through weekly work into a foundation of continued growth and development long after the client has achieved their desired results from counseling.
What inspires you?
Those moments when clients realize that they can, and are making the change they desire.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
For counseling to be successful, it must begin in an environment free from judgement, built on a foundation of respect and compassion.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
The first session is designed to help us focus as a team on what is important to you, and in what areas of your life you desire to see change.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
Open minds lead to open doors. Counseling is an opportunity to think outside the box. Sometimes we spend an entire lifetime practicing unhelpful patterns that are hidden from view. When counseling is working as intended, clients can finally find a safe place to look closely at what's helpful, and setting aside what is no longer needed.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I'm a runner, reader, cyclist, motorcyclist, hiker, dog lover, who enjoys a mixture of family time and solitary endeavors.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Daily learning is living daily. This is what sets us apart from the rest of the known world, our ability to reflect on our here and now, and to make adjustments in real time.
