Christian Hudson-Wallis is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Texas with over 5 years of professional experience assisting clients of all ages to cope with the effects of anxiety, depression, anger, bipolar disorder, trauma, and PTSD. Christian is skilled in using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), humanistic techniques, Rogerian methods, existential therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), the Gottman Method, and acceptance and commitment (ACT) approaches.

Christian earned her Master's degree in Family Psychology from Hardin-Simmons University.  One of the main areas she usually touches on with clients is trauma, and how any trauma or negative life events may be holding them back from where they hope to be. Christian's main concern is making sure clients feel respected, safe, listened to, and trusting so they feel comfortable in opening up about what they are going through. She recognizes what a personal and scary process therapy can be.

Empathetic listening and compassion help Christian to delve into a client's world and be in the moment with them. Christian is there to remind you that whatever you are struggling with, you are not alone. No matter how frightening or embarrassing it may be to open up to a new person about personal things, she hopes to help you gain the skills and peace of mind you need to get through difficult times.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I enjoy variety! My goal is to be able to serve almost any person I have the privilege of working with. There are 2 major factors in having a successful therapeutic outcome. The first is the therapeutic bond between client and therapist. The second is the commitment and trust each person brings to the session. I hope to help clients have trust and commitment to the therapeutic process, and patience to give it time to start seeing the differences they are looking for. We get out of therapy what we put into therapy, so the more effort and commitment we put into it, the better the outcomes we will see. Change and being able to work through things is hard! It definitely takes work, sometimes during a time we feel we are at our lowest. I want to inspire people to have the hope and confidence that they can do it and have success!

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I enjoy working with all ages and different presenting issues! It feels impossible to choose who or what I am most excited to work with because I enjoy working with everyone and the differences they bring to therapy. It keeps me on my toes! It also helps me to expand my knowledge and skills as a professional therapist.

What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?

We are all capable of moving our lives in the direction we wish, and we deserve the chance to do that! I hope clients know they have had the ability all along. It just takes figuring out how we are "stuck" so we can start moving again.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

Thriveworks is giving me back the stability and control I need in my life to take better care of myself so I can grow as a person. I am able to have more flexibility when it comes to my schedule, and there are not as many limitations to which clients I can serve or the types of therapy approaches I can use. Thriveworks has fair pay to clinicians. This allows me to be able to attend conferences/workshops where I can advance in my knowledge and skills in different areas. This will also allow me to better serve different clients with a variety of needs.

What inspires you?

People, animals, nature, family, laughter, love, compassion, music, dance, and learning!

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

My hope is to help you feel comfortable and get to know you as a person. We may talk about what you're going through, a little about your background/upbringing and any previous mental health treatment, your strengths and barriers, and what goals you may have or differences you would like to see as a result of therapy.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

My hope is to help you feel comfortable and get to know you as a person. We may talk about what you're going through, a little about your background/upbringing and any previous mental health treatment, your strengths and barriers, and what goals you may have or differences you would like to see as a result of therapy.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?

I try to lighten the mood of the sessions at appropriate times with some humor and fun, and I am serious when I need to be. Because therapy can feel intense at times, I think it is important to take a breath and maybe even let out a laugh! This helps people feel more comfortable with each other and reminds us that it is okay to have a sense of humor when times are hard. Being able to laugh at things or laugh things off can be a positive coping skill too!

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I am very family-oriented. Spending time with family and friends has always been important to me. I enjoy bonding through fun and meaningful/deep conversation. I love to read and learn! I really enjoy watching documentaries and reading/learning about history, spirituality, and especially things related to this field. I also enjoy being artsy and creative with sketching, painting, arts & crafts, or DIY projects. I do like to watch TV sometimes too.

What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

My spirituality I think has really helped to shape the person I am becoming. I believe in the interconnectedness of all things, and it allows me to not only have more compassion/understanding, but also to see things from different perspectives for a broader point of view.

Why did you decide to become a counselor?

For many reasons! I wanted to be that empathetic ear for people who felt they had no one to talk to or understand what they were going through. Having my own fair share of negative and traumatic experiences growing up, I understood how hard it could be to open up about things we all go through. I also wanted to better understand myself, people and the world so that I could figure out positive ways to make it better. I wanted to be able to better protect others and myself. I also wanted to help others and myself move past what keeps us stuck so we can move toward the healthy, happy lives we all desire and deserve!
