Why did you decide to become a counselor?
My passion for counseling was born out of a deep desire to share a new light of hope with others - a light that shows there is a pathway forward from the anxiety or depression that can sometimes darken our vision of life. Celebrating the discovery of renewed life with a client is a truly rewarding experience. For me, counseling is not just a job, it is a life calling to make a difference for others by walking alongside them through their difficult times.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients who are open to challenging the "secrets for success" they thought they knew. Clients who allow themselves to consider new ways of thinking have a higher probability of learning the new skills needed to begin moving forward again. In short, we are what we think, and what we think ultimately determines what we can do.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am excited to work with anyone who is committed to consistently working towards their goals. Commitment and consistency in the work completed at home is the determining factor for successful growth in therapy. The counselor shares the available tools, the client chooses to use the tools to complete the work that needs to be done. Both components must be present to make progress towards achieving the desired goals.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients knew that they have within themselves the ability to make significant changes in how they feel through adopting simple changes in how they think about life's every day challenges.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I came to Thriveworks because I was seeking an environment that is client-focused and that would allow me to bring everything I have to give to my counseling practice. Thriveworks' offering of both in-person and virtual counseling settings, as well as late appointment options, provides clients with maximum flexibility to chose the setting and hours that work best for them.
What inspires you?
The experience of true connection with others is what inspires me to give my best every day. It is in finding connection with others that we discover we are not alone in this world and that our lives have purpose. Professor, Author and Lecturer Brene Brown defines it best: "Connection is the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship." This is the same level of connection I seek to establish with my clients in our very first meeting. And every time that connection turns into progress, I am inspired all the more!
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I want my clients to leave our first session with the understanding that they have been heard, that what they are feeling matters, and that whatever they share will never go beyond our conversations with each other. Establishing comfort and trust is essential for the development of a successful therapeutic relationship, and that is always the first thing on our agenda.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want the first session to be a comfortable space to share the experiences and events that have brought you to this moment. Once a genuine understanding is established, we will work together on identifying goals and establishing flexible timeframes to accomplish them. You will also gain understanding of the important role of daily self-care as the new foundation upon which you will rebuild and reclaim your life.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I want clients to know that I am genuine and real. I will listen with openness and I will never judge. My clients will always be heard, respected and validated. They will never be left feeling they are just another appointment on my calendar nor will they ever feel like a "diagnosis." My clients will feel my full attention when we are meeting and my efforts will always be directed towards helping them to achieve their goals.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love being outdoors and being mindful about the beauty of nature around me. Nature is one of our best resources for healing...and it is FREE! I love spending as much time as I can with my family or having lunch with friends. I also love spending time with music, whether it be listening to my favorite rock tunes or playing the piano. Music speaks to the soul like no other language can. And finally, I love baseball! I'm frequently watching televised MLB games or occasionally going with a friend to a Durham Bulls game.
