Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
Like many in the mental health field, I bring my own life experiences including trauma, loss and grief, parenting, and stress which led me into the practice. I originally started school for nursing and realized while I love help people nursing was not for me. A therapist I worked with while I fostered teen girls suggested I look into counseling and within the first semester I knew I found my future. As a counselor, I find joy and satisfaction in helping people and look forward to meeting each new client
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with young adults to mature adults; however, I enjoy working with teens as well.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I love working with people in life transitions, those experiencing mood disorders like anxiety and depression, and trauma or addiction issues. I also see people in medical crisis or chronic illness situations.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks provides me the opportunity to see a wide variety of clients from those local to people who live in remote areas of the state, an area with the greatest access problem. With a phone or computer anyone can be seen.
What inspires you?
My inspiration for providing therapy to clients comes primarily from the people I know personally who took the tools offered by a therapist and made small and giant changes to their lives, proving it is possible to change at any age.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
The first session is information gathering, like what the client is hoping to get out of therapy, and discussions about what will achieve those goals. I also provide information about the process for the individual person, and what modalities (treatments) can be used in order to make the best decision for the person.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
During the first session a treatment plan should be at least started and hopefully finished and a first homework (easy) assigned. We will determine how often a person is seen and what modalities might be most beneficial.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
If you work with me, I usually assign a homework activity each week. I encourage my clients to have a notebook or notepad to write in, preferably a notebook of any kind. The homework could be as simple as writing down one sentence a day or scrawling a phase on the mirror. The homework is to solidify what we worked on to help move you toward your goal.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Reading is my passion and I have enjoyed it since I was 6 yrs old. I also crochet, cross stitch, and embroider (not well), and spend time with my dog, go walking, swimming, and recently going to the gym.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I grew up in Utah, and come from pioneer stock, grew up sort of Mormon (jack for those who know), am a non-denominational Christian, with non-traditional values. Prejudice is inherent in all people not just those our church agrees with and/or welcomes.
