Get to know Chelsea

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I've always been extremely empathetic towards the feelings of others but it wasn't until God took over my life that I felt the draw to counseling. He gave me enough life experience in a few short years that I knew that I needed to follow this calling.

What types of clients do you work with best?

The clients I work best with are those who don't take themselves too seriously and understand that while sometimes counseling will have uncomfortable moments that are necessary for growth, it doesn't mean it can't also be enjoyable.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I love clients who make me better. I'll teach you and you teach me. I WANT to hear your perspectives and thoughts. If it doesn't match mine, that absolutely ok because I'm open minded. I just ask that you give me the same respect.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

Ask anyone who ever achieved anything worthwhile, and they will tell you that they didn't do it alone. They had someone supporting them. This is what a counselor does. The name literally means 'give consultation or be a confidant'. It wont always be pretty but it will always be honest. Why? Your success is my success.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

I chose Thrive works because it made the most sense for what I want to achieve as a person. I get the freedom to work both virtual and in person during hours that fit my family and for a company I respect. I get to do the most good for clients but don't have to sacrifice what's important to me to do it.

What inspires you?

In a word, resilience. Getting to be witness to those who are the underdog defy the world trying to beat them down and keep fighting the odds, well, it makes me want to be like them.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

Our first session I'm going to tell you a little about me but what I really want to know is all about you. Who are you? What do you care about? Do you have good taste in music? I'll probably try to make you laugh. In the end, we are going to make plans to see each other again.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

I hope that at the end of our first session, a client feels heard. Like that deep soul sigh, sense of relief, that someone finally gets them. I'd prefer if we set some goals and start building a plan but if it all we get to is just that they leave with a little more hope then they had before, then Ill call that a success.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?

I'm going to keep it real and I want you to feel to keep comfortable enough to keep things real with me too.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I love to travel- in the USA and internationally- and oh the stories I have to tell. I also enjoy reading. I attend a lot of concerts from all types of music, I just need a good beat and that it be played very loud. Mostly though, I'm a mom so time off is a relative term... I just do my best to make whatever I'm doing fun.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

I hope that anyone who meets me would say that I am a kind person. At the end of the day, I think that is what matters most.
