"As one who has experienced personal trauma, I understand how we may be impacted in different ways by painful life circumstances and how we can respond to build ourselves back up and be empowered to move forward."
Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I have always loved conversing with and listening to people and learning about them. I liked understanding people and learning about psychology and how the brain and mind works. I wanted to help people overcome their mental difficulties which are much more prevalent today. I have had personal experience with depression, anxiety, and medical issues in my childhood as well as family members with medical issues. My grandfather was a psychiatrist who was an inspiration to me. I grew a desire to help others in improving their mental health in ways that I had needed myself.
What types of clients do you work best with?
Adults and clients who are open to collaboration.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew about therapy, mental health, or the healing process?
It can be a complicated and long process for healing to occur and may require more time than expected. Healing comes in different forms, such as through forming therapeutic relationships, acceptance of the self, and learning ways to cope.
What can clients expect in their first session with you and in the early stages of therapy?
The first sessions are a time dedicated to learning about the client and understanding their experience. It’s a time where I can discover what treatment works for them and how we can grow our relationship as client and counselor. It’s also a time where clients can grow accustomed and be more comfortable with me.
What personal experiences or values inform your practice as a therapist/provider?
I have personal experience with childhood TBI, depression, anxiety, ADHD, and difficulty with executive functioning. From these, I can connect with clients as a therapist and develop a better empathic understanding of their experience.
How do you tailor therapy to meet each client’s unique needs?
When learning about a client, I assess how they respond to treatment and remain curious. According to their communication style, their interests, and their needs, I conduct therapy that would target areas that may provide relief of distress the most and help the client better understand their own experience. It is my understanding that all clients want to be understood.
