About Melissa
Melissa Hinds is a Resident Licensed Mental Health Clinician with 3 years of experience and a concentration in psychodynamic approaches. She works with adults and seniors who are experiencing concerns involving depression, anxiety, family and couples counseling, behavioral problems, anger management, as well as mood and personality disorders. As a queer-identified Afro-Caribbean woman of color, Melissa understands the importance of cultural competency. She has expertise in working with populations diverse in race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, spiritual practices, sexual orientation, gender identity, and political affiliations.
Melissa has a Master of Arts in Psychoanalysis from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis. She practices modern psychoanalysis, a form of talk therapy that aims to uncover and resolve unconscious forces and childhood experiences that have lasting effects on adult behavior and mental states.
Melissa helps patients explore their patterns, motivations, and defenses to develop healthier coping mechanisms. She believes the greatest therapeutic successes result from a co-creative process and tailors treatment to the individual. Schedule an appointment with her today!

"As a psychoanalyst, I use a client-centered, holistic approach that prioritizes the human being beyond the diagnosis, and connects patterns of thinking to correct patterns of behavior."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
My first interactions with mental health professionals in my adolescence were not positive ones. It felt cold, punitive, and transactional... and almost made me uncomfortable with the idea of therapy altogether. It was important to me to be an alternative to others seeking care at an uncertain time in their lives. I've never strayed from my original intentions.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with adult clients who are seeking to explore, understand, and address the roots of their own behaviors and motivators, and not only seeking to irradicate them.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I'm most excited to work with clients who are truly curious about themselves.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I wish all clients knew that feeling lost and/or unequipped for the road ahead is a perfectly acceptable response to having started a life-changing journey.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks allows me to do what I love and what I'm passionate about in a way that feels progressive to me. I'm able focus on the work rather than a job, and I find value in having a healthy balance between doing the work I enjoy and enjoying the life I'm working hard towards.
What inspires you?
My clients inspire me every day. One of my favorite things about being a therapist is being able to witness someone experiencing their own growth. That moment when they break the tension of the water's surface and realize for the first time in a long time that they are breathing again!...THAT moment inspires me.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I'd like us to spend the first session getting to know each other and getting a better understanding of how you currently view your world, since I'll be spending some time in it!
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In our first session, I'd like to ensure that we are on the same page about treatment goals, life plans, what you hope to achieve during your time in therapy, and how we might best work together meet those goals.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I'm a pretty open-minded, adaptive, and flexible person, so please do feel free to show up as your most authentic self.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Lately, I've been a cat person who has been discovering a love of dogs.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I'm a firm believer in transparency and communication, I aim to make the truth as comfortable as possible.
