Get to know Melis

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?

I chose to become a mental health counselor to combine my interests in psychology and my natural ability to connect with others. I strive to make a positive difference in the lives of my clients.

What types of clients do you work with best?

I work best with clients who are eager to engage in the therapeutic process. I am ready to meet you where you are and am committed to providing a safe, supportive space where we can progress at your own pace toward growth and healing.

What type of clients are you most excited to work with?

I am most excited to work with clients who are enthusiastic and ready to embark on their journey of self-exploration with me. I believe in the transformative power of understanding the underlying causes of symptoms, rather than simply addressing the symptoms themselves.

What's one thing you wish all clients knew?

I want all clients to understand that finding the right therapist is crucial, and it’s perfectly okay if we are not the best match. It’s important to seek out a therapist who feels like the right fit for your needs and journey.

Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?

As a doctoral student, having a flexible schedule to work independently is essential. Thriveworks offers this flexibility, along with a positive work environment and a strong community of mental health professionals who support one another.

What inspires you?

I find inspiration in the power of connection and empathy. Building meaningful relationships with my clients and helping them navigate their emotional journeys drives me to give my best every day.

What can clients expect in their first session with you?

Clients can expect a thoughtful and empathetic first session where we will discuss their reasons for seeking therapy and their personal goals. I will gather information about their history and present concerns, and we will begin to outline a path forward that feels right for them.

What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?

In the first session, my goal is to establish a strong foundation for our therapeutic relationship. I aim to create a safe and welcoming environment where the individual feels comfortable sharing their story. I want to gain a comprehensive understanding of their current concerns, personal history, and therapy goals. Additionally, I strive to build trust, address any questions or concerns they may have, and collaboratively develop an initial plan for our work together.

What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?

Clients should know that I appreciate the bravery required to take the initial step toward therapy. Asking for help is a sign of strength, and I am dedicated to supporting you through every phase of your journey, offering a nurturing environment where you can work towards healing and growth.

What do you do for fun/on your time off?

I am an artist on my free time! I love engaging with various forms of art ranging from embroidery to collages. I am enthusiastic about incorporating art into my therapeutic approach, as I strongly believe in the transformative power of expressive arts.

What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?

A good sense of humor!
