About Karissa
Karissa Peoples is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with nearly 15 years of experience in the mental health field. She began her career providing advocacy and case management for survivors of assault and trafficking and has since continued to grow her clinical practice working with adults both locally and internationally.
Karissa earned her Bachelor of Social Work from The Ohio State University and her Master of Clinical Social Work from Boston College. She draws from a variety of therapeutic approaches to meet each client’s unique needs and goals.
Karissa believes that therapy should be a supportive, nonjudgmental space where people can explore challenges, build insight, and move toward meaningful change. Rather than trying to “fix” people, her goal is to empower clients and help them develop the tools and understanding needed to navigate life’s ups and downs.

"My goal is to create a safe space where folks feel seen, heard, and comfortable sharing their struggles — together, we'll work on building the skills and tools to address life's challenges."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I chose to become a counselor because I enjoy helping and empowering others who are struggling to find the light when they are in dark places.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am especially passionate about working with people who are new to therapy and are curious about building a stronger understanding of themselves. This includes those interested in developing skills in emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and exploring the connection between thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I also enjoy supporting people who are in periods of transition and are still asking questions about identity, purpose, and direction, including the ongoing process of wondering who they want to become, which can show up at many stages of life. I also feel deeply committed to supporting BIPOC clients. I aim to create a space that feels steady, respectful, and collaborative where you can feel seen, supported, and empowered to grow at your own pace.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
We all need help and support at various times in our lives. Seeking help when we are struggling is not a sign of weakness, but strength and hope for a better quality of life.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
It's a great company that helps a lot of folks.
What inspires you?
Spirituality. Community. The act of building each other up and seeking healing and restoration.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I believe rapport is crucial. I want to get an idea of what brings you into therapy and work on treatment goals, but also get to know you and answer any questions you may have.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
Sessions with me are virtual only. Also, because I take a skills approach I often provide literature and skills to practice/review outside of sessions.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
DIY, reading, and trying not to kill my houseplants. I also love traveling, concerts, and spending time outdoors with my friends and family.
