About Joshua
Joshua Putnam is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with 15 years of experience. He specializes in supporting individuals through depression, anxiety, relationships, trauma, crisis, and men's issues. Joshua has a background in the public school system working with adolescents and young adults but has expanded to the adult population over the past several years. He favors a laidback approach to counseling in which trust is established, connections are formed, and needs and goals are discussed in a safe and nonjudgmental setting.
Joshua received his Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Cambridge College. He utilizes a strength-based, solution-focused model and incorporates techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, positive psychology, and family systems.
Joshua takes the time to understand his client’s presenting needs, past struggles, and motivations. He feels confident that by developing a relationship that is not just therapeutic but personal, he can assist you in overcoming the challenges you are facing.

"As a mental health professional, I strive to make genuine connections to foster lasting relationships between individuals."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
Cultivating genuine relationships and experiencing the amazing work you can do with someone has been the driving force behind my passion with this field. I consider myself truly blessed to have met every individual I have connected with in this line of work over the years.
What types of clients do you work with best?
My primary background and "sweetspot" is with teens/adolescents and young adults. In recent years I have also enjoyed and become quite comfortable working with adults and other professionals in relational aspects of life as well.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
Any and all! I believe I am blessed to come in contact and not only work with but develop a true relationship with all individuals served.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
That I do not see this as work. I strive to create a real and true relationship with someone so that together we can best serve their needs.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
The opportunity to work with individuals of all ages and the great feeling of community I have experienced from the people I have met within the company itself.
What inspires you?
My work, learning and growing as an individual, and being content but always striving to be the best person I can be for myself and others.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
A welcoming environment where we have a conversation between two people. I never want an individual to feel as though I am a robot, rather we are developing rapport through a conversation between two authentic people. We will develop a roadmap and goals for presenting concerns that will drive future meetings.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
A state of comfortability and to show them that I am genuinely interested in not only their presenting needs in session, but them as a person. Develop a solid rapport and roadmap to drive our future sessions.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I am authentic, like to create a safe, welcoming, and laid back atmosphere to allow individuals to really work through their needs. I am driven and passionate about learning and growing as a professional and individual.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Well, I do love to work and many people say I should take time off, but to be honest I am so passionate about the individuals I work with that I enjoy it and it keeps me motivated and driven. I like to use the gym, go to sporting events, spend time with family, and travel local to all the great places locally within New England.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
My continued drive to always learn and grow and be the best person I can be for myself, my family, and the individuals I work with.
