About Heather
Heather Alexandre is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who works with children, adolescents, and adults to resolve challenges related to anxiety, depression, relationships, grief and loss, and school/work adjustment. For the last 15 years, she worked with chronically ill children on an inpatient unit. In addition, she has worked in a preschool setting, tutored children, and led small community-based child development classes. Heather has also run parenting support groups and supported new mothers during postpartum. She likes to work with children and families to help them overcome and appreciate their daily and life-changing struggles while providing them with the tools to handle future challenges successfully.
Heather offers a fun, playful, collaborative, empathic environment and an integrative and holistic approach that combines aspects of play, mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral, strength-based, and psychodynamic theories to help you and/or your child understand and change nonproductive thoughts and behaviors, expand emotional awareness, improve relationships, build self-confidence, and face the obstacles that are getting in the way of living a happy and healthy life.
"I believe it is imperative to involve the parents and/or caregiver when working with children and adolescents," says Heather. "I will use a collaborative approach looking at the bio-psychosocial and spiritual model to better understand the child and family. I will involve the caregivers in treatment to support the child's strengths and hope to help caregivers better understand challenges the child is facing, and work on strategies together to overcome their struggles."
"As a mother, a former hospital employee, a former educator, and a clinical social worker, I empathize with you and truly recognize the hardships we are all working through and celebrate the resilience we all have shown," says Heather. "It is vital that we all check in with ourselves and provide ourselves with love, grace, and gratitude. The best way to better care for you and your family is to work on straggling your mental health. The work you put in will reward you, I want to help you remember that your mental health is a priority, your inner peace is essential and your self-care is a necessity. You and your child are stronger than you know."

"As someone who has worked with children for over 17 years in a variety of settings and now have become a mother more recently I have a well rounded perspective of the struggles that face our children and caregivers in today's world."

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I grew up as a sibling of a chroniclly ill sister, as a family it was always hard to find the right fit in a counselor. Many didn't understand the demands, the losses, and hardship that came for the entire family, but even more people often over looked the strengths, and reslience my family had. I became a Social worker and a counselor because I wanted to help children and their families learn life long coping skills, honor their strengths, and be the safe place for them to do the hard work so they can recognize their potential and importance.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with children and their caregivers. Children of all ages. Specifically children who are going through long-term medical issues and their siblings and/or loss who are going through grief and loss issues. I have many years experience and personal experience in this area.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
One of the characteristics I strive for in both my professional and personal life is to be authentic and transparent, so to be totally transparent, this is my first time working one to one in a clinical setting like Thriveworks. Therefore I am honestly beyond excited to work with all of them. I am most looking forward to seeing the faces of caregivers and children when they have realized they are doing the work and seeking the answers that bring them comfort and closure.
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
No one has all the answers and not one person can do it all "the right way" all the time... it's in our failures and our questions we find the best most rewarding path forward
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks seems to support their employees well and empowers them with the tools to be successful for our clients but also in our personal life, and for that I applaud them and look forward to working for them.
What inspires you?
Children really inspire me to work harder and to learn more and keep evolving! Over the past 15 years, I have had the privilege to walk along side many families journey through illness specifically pediatric cancer and I am always in awe and inspired by the children's resilience, the caregivers grace and strength. I am also inspired by children and their play, and perspective of the world. It keeps me on my toes and also ignites me to keep the wonder and joy alive in my own life.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
I believe the best therapeutic relationship is when the client feels comfortable with the counselor. My goal is for you to get to know me as your therapist as well as I get to know you to ensure we're the right fit for each other, which will ensure we will have a successful relationship to work collaboratively towards your goals. I hope to offer a welcoming, respectful environment and work collaboratively toward your goals.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to know what brought you here and what your goals are while also telling you about myself and how we will work together to ensure we are the right fit for each other.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
My goal is to offer you authenticity, transparency, and a genuine relationship to help you reach your goal and empower you. We all have a mental tool box we add to as we go through life. I want to help you add to that tool box and also find tools in there you may have forgotten about. I believe in a collaborative, holistic, and integrative approach to working with children and their families.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
The ocean is my favorite place all four seasons! I enjoy photography, taking pictures and admiring art, but also making art mostly with my daughter. Spending time laughing with my friends and family, that could be running through the sprinkler with my toddler or playing card games with my girl friends.
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Motherhood.
