About Gerardo
Gerardo is a Licensed Therapist with 15 years of experience in the mental health field. People and colleagues tend to describe him as open, calming, empathic, and a fearless advocate of my clients. His approach to therapy incorporates multiple perspectives based on your personal goals, which aim to enhance the mind-body-spirit connection, nurture personal growth, promote healing, and overcome challenges. Gerardo uses mainly integrative and humanistic therapeutic approaches to therapy, combining insight and skills-based frameworks. His work also incorporates a psychoeducational component that aims to help you construct new ways of organizing your feelings, coping skills, behaviors, and relationships. He works collaboratively with everyone integrating the most beneficial approaches to their unique situation.
Gerardo is a therapist working for over 15 years, internationally (in Mexico) and in the USA with adults. He has extensive experience in treating mood and anxiety disorders; trauma recovery; PTSD; mental health and HIV; substance abuse/dual diagnosis; acculturation/transcultural issues, and ADHD. He attended Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in Mexico City earning a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Child/Educational Psychology and I received a master’s in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University (NH campus) in 2003. Other modalities that he works with in therapy are: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Culturally Sensitive, Existential, Multicultural, Person-Centered, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Strength-Based, and Trauma Focused.
Gerardo’s goal in therapy is to promote healing and create meaningful and lasting changes. During therapy, you will develop your capacity for insight and understanding to empower your transformation and development. Therapy sessions will give you the tools to improve your quality of life, expand strategies to cope with challenges, improve self-regulation, encourage change, and start to make healthy decisions in the here and now. Gerardo is confident that the work in therapy will help you to become the best version of yourself.

Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I have always been inspired by my grandmother’s work, dedication, and commitment to help people (she went to school and became a nurse/midwife in the early 1930’s). I admire her strength and courage to go to school in a time when women had less privileges in many ways, including academia.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I enjoy working with adults with several types of struggles in their lives and have been able to establish great rapport with them during the years that I have been practicing.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
I love to help clients to promote growth in different areas of their lives, to feel better, to heal, to get better, and to improve their daily functioning.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks allows me to serve and increase the access to mental health services to a community in need of teletherapy modality.
What inspires you?
I feel inspired by how people can thrive in difficult situations in their lives.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
My goal during the first session is to develop the working relationship, get to know you, develop rapport, and help you recognize what’s been helpful and what’s no longer working for you.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
My goal is to relax and recharge battery, so I try to have a balance between personal time, social activities and swimming, at least, twice a week.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I value and cherish my relationships with other people as part of my cultural background.
