Why did you decide to become a counselor?
I began to experience symptoms consistent with anxiety at a young age and had a tough time putting my feelings and thoughts into words. I felt that my family and friends, while unbelievably supportive and loving, weren't able to fully understand my symptoms. I was paired with a therapist who provided me with the language, tools, and understanding of my experience that once named, did not seem so scary anymore. The power of my therapist's ability to understand me on a level I did not know possible was inspiring and empowering. As I got older and my relationship with my therapist continued to grow, I realized my passion was to pursue a career in the field with the hope to form connections as deep as the one I had (and still have!) with my therapist.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with folks who are open to digging deep, getting vulnerable, and finding the humor in unexpected places. The work in therapy can be difficult, grueling, and intimidating, but coming to session with an openness to sit in that discomfort as we shine a light on those once dark places is crucial for the path forward. In the words of Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus, we will "take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!".
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In our first session, my goal is to lay the foundation of a supportive therapeutic relationship between myself and my client. My hope is that folks walk away from the first session feeling comfortable, at ease, and excited to begin our work together.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I love board games, puzzles, Nintendo, and chicken parmesan sandwiches. Binging re-runs of Cheers is my favorite pasttime. Norm!
