About Christian
Christian Hanson is a Resident Licensed Mental Health Counselor with over 2 years of experience working closely with the substance use population as well as the 18-35 age group. He specializes in issues surrounding sobriety, college life, family issues, interpersonal communication, relationships, work-related stress, and motivation, among others. He is well versed in helping clients experiencing crises, as well as those who are dealing with more common life experiences such as anxiety and depression. Christian believes clients can find ways to measurably increase their quality of life, no matter their struggles.
Christian received his Master’s in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Massachusetts Boston. He utilizes a deep understanding of the intricacies of both dialectical behavior therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy to help clients understand, in simple terms, how to regain agency in their lives.
Christian has helped many clients discover what their ideal life looks like, and identify the steps needed to get there. If you feel you are lost in your mental health journey, he may be able to help you as well. Reach out to schedule an initial appointment with Christian today.

"Having spent time in substance use treatment and partial hospitalization programs, I have experience working with clients to figure out what is and isn't helpful and how to get the most out of the process."

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I have both personal and professional experience in seeing the unfortunate reality of how the mental health system can, at times, fail the people we are trying to serve. I am very invested in being the kind of clinician that helps people feel like mental health CAN be helpful for them.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work best with clients who have a strong desire to change their lives. Whether they know how to go about doing that or not, if the desire is present we can work on the rest!
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I am particularly excited to work with clients who are struggling with self-love, as watching these clients cultivate a greater sense of self worth is always rewarding.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
We all have SOME ability to change our lives, the hard part is often figuring out how to get out of our own way!
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I am excited to work with individuals on a one-on-one basis again and be an important part of their holistic treatment plan
What inspires you?
Clients gaining a new perspective always inspires me
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
Clients can expect compassion and respect from me
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I would like to get a good sense of where the client is at currently, but most importantly I want to figure out what the client WANTS for their treatment/life
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I am a firm believer that therapy requires work, but figuring out how to find the motivation to DO that work is an essential step of the process as well.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I thoroughly enjoy sitting on a good porch, as well as videogames
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
Honesty.
