Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
As a child I was very interested in criminal psychology. I pursued that when I turned 18, and the beginning of my career I worked in corrections, and that's where I began working in Substance Abuse. I was at the time exposed to a large amount of trauma. It was then I decide to get a masters degree in clinical social work. I love clinical work. I find the diagnosing and how the brain works fascinating. That is why i was certificed in neuroscience at Boston College by Jessica Black.
What types of clients do you work with best?
I work with adults and adolescents very well.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I enjoy working with both adults and adolescents.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
That their fixed negative thoughts about themselves are not actually their thoughts. They were developed from an outside source at some point in their life, usually in childhood. But I explore that with them, and we make that connection. That's one of my favorite parts of doing this work.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
It seems to be a really great organization. I really liked everything that they offer. Everyone also seems really great.
What inspires you?
The look when clients make life changing connections.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
They can except a very detailed history and detailed review of current symptomatology. They will be informed of diagnosis with psychoeducation around diagnosis as well as why they meet criteria for said diagnosis. We will then briefly discuss what treatment modality is the evidenced based treatment and why, as well as what it does to change the symptoms that the client is experiencing. I usually leave it there so we can pick up on the treatment plan next session.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I accomplish a diagnosis that is based on a detailed assessment. I am able to educate client on diagnosis as well as on treatment modality, while indicated how this modality will help the client in reducing symptomatology. This lets clients leave session feeling hopeful.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
That my goal is to reduce symptomology or extinct diagnosis. I will assign tasks, and homework to be done between sessions. We will have to work together to make the therapy work.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I spend time with my two teenage children. I love to go to flee markets, antique stores, and thrift stores. I live on a state park so I love to take my dogs for walks as well.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
My strength and resiliency.
