Afreen Nizami is a resident Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) with over 5 years experience in the mental health field. She is passionate about helping children, adolescents, young adults, and adults, and couples address their unique challenges and live more fulfilled lives. Afreen specializes in depression, anxiety, PSTD, grief, trauma, school stress, relationship problems, and life transitions.
Afreen completed her Master's degree of Counseling Psychology at Northeastern University. Afreen utilizes multiple approaches including mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and many more.

Why did you decide to become a counselor or psychiatric provider?
I love talking to people and I saw the lack of help in the mental health field when I worked in mental health inpatient units.
What types of clients do you work with best?
Young adults.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
I love working with children and adolescents and young adults.
What's one thing you wish all clients knew?
One thing that I wished all clients knew is how much I want to see them grow in therapy and how happy that makes me that I am part of their journey.

What inspires you?
What inspires me most in life is getting a chance to learn from people and grow as a person personally and professionally.
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
The first session, I try to get to know about the client, build a rapport, and ask alot of questions. I also want them to feel safe and comfortable.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
In the first session, I just want to the client to get to know me by building rapport and I want them to feel comfortable to be able to open up and talk.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first session?
I am compassionate person who tries to understand everyone's different perspectives and stories. I love my job because I get a chance to help people.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
Wnat I love to do for fun for is spending time with my family and crocheting. I also love to travel.
What's one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I am mom to three boys.
Can you tell us about a success you had with a client?
I have worked with a client who struggled with loneliness and anxiety. We worked on helping her become more social. She did start making new friends which helped her so much with her anxiety. She was much happier and was able to navigate things like breakups better.
