About Abby
Abby Wilson is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. She has worked with adults who have a wide range of issues and diagnoses, specializing in treating traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, and issues of gender and sexuality. She has experience with mindfulness meditation, challenges related to death and dying, and chronic illness. Abby also has several years of experience working with incarcerated populations and enjoys assisting ex-offenders as they reintegrate back into society.
Abby's therapy style is psychodynamic, open, and affirming. She utilizes cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques, which help one to build self-awareness and challenge unhelpful ways of thinking. By understanding the ways we think and perceive the world around us, we can ultimately take control of these thinking habits and become skilled in changing the resulting feelings.
"We each face unique challenges in our lives and we possess a unique set of strengths to face these challenges," says Abby. "In therapy, I help people to identify and cultivate these strengths as a vital part of their recovery. I consider it a great honor to assist my clients in their individual journeys towards wellness."

"I am a licensed clinician with 15 years of experience, having spent most of this time in community-based healthcare and in correctional settings."

What types of clients do you work with best?
Any clients who are motivated for change and enjoy learning/improving their self-awareness. Success in therapy is dependent on the work being done in between sessions, so it's always exciting to work with clients who are motivated to try new things. However, I definitely understand that getting to this point is sometimes part of the work!
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
You CAN change. Sometimes it's hard, and sometimes it's painful. But change is always possible.
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
Thriveworks has an excellent and unique model of practice that allows clinicians to have both a lot of support and a lot of autonomy. Being able to build your own schedule is pretty unbeatable!
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
The first session is often a lot of information gathering: getting to know what the client is experiencing, what they would like help with, and what skills they already have. I try to create a safe environment for the client so they feel comfortable being open.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
Making a good interpersonal connection in the first session is the most important task. If a client doesn't feel like they "click" with a clinician they should always feel welcome to say so, as I would love to assist in them finding their perfect fit.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I'm work part-time as an artist doing commissions, but my real passion is writing; I'm currently in pursuit of a publishing contract!
