Why did you decide to become a counselor?
At the age of 47 and feeling my life was at a dead end I returned to school and started moving in the direction of becoming a wounded healer. I love that term for I believe one who has lived though many of the difficulties our clients come here for has a special outlook and appreciation of just what they are going through.
What types of clients do you work with best?
Clients who are skeptical of treatment and have very little hope that they can find joy and meaning in their lives.
What type of clients are you most excited to work with?
Clients of all different ages, race, sexual orientation and outlooks on life, including politics!
What’s one thing you wish all clients knew?
That therapists are not prophets sitting on a mountain judging and telling you what you must do. I am fellow traveler who believes I have something that makes it easy for me to listen carefully and be there for you. The most important thing to me is to build a therapeutic alliance of trust and respect. I am on your side and together we may move mountains!
Why did you choose to practice at Thriveworks?
I chose to practice at Thriveworks because I believe I can be helpful in their format and believe it is important to being the therapy to you. That is especially true in these trying times.
What inspires you?
The triumphs of the human spirit that we see on a daily basis. As much negativity there is, at this time, there are miracles also happening on a daily basis. Those triumphs of the human spirit inspire me and urge me make the world a more positive place,
What can clients expect in their first session with you?
This is a time to get to know one another a little bit
I’m going to be asking some questions to know what’s been going on for the client
I’m going to be answering any questions that they have (it’s ok if they don’t have any)
I’m going to share my thoughts and initial observations about what they shared with me, so that they know what I’m thinking and it aligns with their experience
I’m going to share the general outline of what our therapy will look like (although we can pivot later if needed). This includes a preview of tools I will teach them, the order of things, how we will track progress, etc.
What do you want to accomplish with an individual in their first session?
I want to begin building a therapeutic alliance. Although that is hard considering the many questions and topics covered. Nevertheless I believe it is important that I leave the client feeling heard and respected.
What should clients know about you before scheduling a first counseling session?
I am not a taskmaster. Although there are general topics I would like to get through you are in the drivers seat. If need be I will be respectful and listen without cutting you off.
What do you do for fun/on your time off?
I am a big baseball fan and love going to the park in the summer. I have only been married for 11 years and I still love learning new things and doing new things with my wife. Baseball is not one of them.
What’s one thing about you that defines you (non-professional)?
I'm real!. What you see is what you get. Not a lot of hidden nuances.
